Hey guys, just got a 2013 tacoma trd sport a couple days ago. Wanting to know what I need to do to be able to stuff 285/70/17 tires under my taco. The wheels will be the sema edition trd wheels.
On second question is leveling kit or 3 inch lift? I will be doing zero offroading in this thing, as I am building a 72 gmc for fun times. Lol, she will be a streetqueen! Pictures of both with 285's would be awesome! Price between the two?

Just the essentials and no extra fluff.
You don't need to do anything if you don't mind a slightly larger turning radius.

Nice, do you mean I won't be able to go lock to lock without scrubbing? Or the tires will some how effect turning radius? And what's a 3" lift cost? Nothing too special, as I said I won't be wheeling in this thing. I'd just like to keep my factory ride, or pretty close to it anyways. 35s fit with 3" or stick with the 33s? Oh and no trimming for me please! Sorry for the question attack, I've never drove/worked on anything newer then 83, kind of a noob.:help:

If your trying to fit 285s with a 3in lift you most likely have to do a cab mount chop and trim the fenders. Some people have lucked out and for some reason and were able to fit 285s without much modification but I dont see how that worked. A 2in lift you will definitely have to cut into the cab and you'll have to do major cutting on fenders.

I have 285 75 16 and I had to do the CMC and murder my fenders in order to fit my tires, and I still rub with a 2.5 ome lift when I'm out wheeling. But if your after looks, and you really want it don't let the work discourage you.

I don't understand, I thought I would for sure be able to fit 285's with a 3 inch lift. Especially since I won't be wheeling it. I don't really want to trim anything unless it's extremely simple and very little of it.

Not to be rude but your first post is a bit off putting to folks.
If you had done a quick search by typing in 285/70/17 you would find that what you are asking has been discussed on many levels from here to next week.

May want to check out a some of the builds, there are number of folks here that will answer questions if asked in a respectful manner.

Well if you didnt notice I'm new here. So I'm not the best at navigating the site. I tried a couple searchs. Thought this was my best option. And i certainly dont think I said anything in a disrespectful manner? If there are any links you could post it'd be awesome. If not I guess I'll keep searching.

Welcome to TW! This place is a great resource for just about everything Tacoma related. There is a search function on here that some people prefer you to use before posting a question. In my opinion, it doesn't work all that well. Use google and type tacoma after your search terms and you'll get tons of hits. To answer your question, I have 285/70/17s on my truck and I had to do the cab mount chop and trim a ton of plastic. Despite all of that, I still rub sometimes. Nothing major, but still annoying.

I like the look and I'm still able to go offroading and turn at full lock without any problems. I used pruning shears to trim the fenders. It makes a nice clean cut and won't melt the plastic like a dremel can. I'm on my work comp so I don't have any pictures, but look at my build thread if you'd like to see what that size looks like. I would definitely recommend going with a 3" lift rather than a leveling kit. You're going to need as much clearance as possible. Plus while your lifting, you can put aftermarket upper control arms which you will definitely need in order to get a proper alignment.

Any pics of the new ride?

Pics will be up soon! Thanks for help guys! And thanjs for the welcome! Im not dead set on the 285's just because of the trimming and cmc. Is it the width or height of the tire that causes the need for trim/cmc? If it's the width I wouldn't think a 255/80 would look too shabby. Just gotta search for some pics. But with the tacomas being narrower in the front end, pizza cutters might do it for me.:notsure: I'd just like to get a 33" tire on it. But I am prepared for what I might have to do!

I believe the width is the main factor. 255/80s should be fine with minimal trimming, but I have no personal experience with this. This is with a 3" lift of course.

    285's will require cutting steel.

255's will fit easily with a lift.

Of course that assumes you drive over things bigger than pot holes or speed bumps. Mall Queens don't need Cab Mount Chops all the time.

New UCAs won't keep 285's from rubbing the UCA on stock Sport wheels

Stick with 265's unless you are willing to do some cutting. 3" lift doesn't give a lot more clearance than a 2" in some areas.

I've found that using Google to search this site is often better than using the Search feature on the site itself. Go to Google and search for "tacomaworld 285/70/17".
