Granted....I spend some time off road. Not as much as some guys but a good deal. I have 72k miles on the truck and I don't believe mine has ever been cleaned. Mine was visibly dirty.

MAKE SURE YOU USE MAF SENSOR CLEANER!!

Now, this is where a forum like this really shines. Someone asks a question, and someone goes out of their way to help. No ball-busting, just good, helpful advice. Now... I'm going to go take a peek at the MAP sensor!

I browse/search this site fairly often. Has never failed me. I don't post often but I found this thread after having a horrible decrease in performance 2 weeks ago. Took a trip in my 2015 DCSB 4x4 (has ~12,000 miles on it) -- got 14 mpg. It has always had an issue with constant downshifting from overdrive, this trip was no different but the mileage, OMG. Called my dealership - everything checked out; trans fluid, no codes. Knowing this level of performance was below par (my brother has a Taco with 150,000+ miles no issues) I started searching the forum. Low and behold I think I found the solution. Apart from having a fairly new K&N filter install I have a slight lift/leveling kit (2" or so). Anyway, THANK ALL OF YOU FOR SHARING INFORMATION. I cleaned the MAF and reset the ECM. So far much better around town; quieter and better throttle response, lower idle !! I expect my next trip will be a much improved experience.

UPDATE: The MAF clean along with the ECM reset corrected all the above issues. Overdrive performed flawlessly through the Flint Hills and achieved 20-21 mpg. Truly an amazing result.

You guys running oiled filters would go back to paper if you saw the Used Oil Analysis reports showing how that oil gets into the engine...

Hmm, so not the brainiest move with the K&N filter ? What's the story on them - gooping up sensors ? I have no idea. I bought the filter months ago to see if it improved the overdrive issue before finding this thread because it sounded like the engine was starving for air. It did help a little, then of course things went to crap a couple weeks ago which led me to this discussion where I was able correct the problem. If those filters are gumming things up, do you go back to OEM ? The way my truck runs now, I want to keep it that way - it has never been this good since I bought it - (had 8 miles on it).

Paper filters do a better job of filtration.

The oil that is applied to filters like K&N gets sucked into the engine where it coats sensors (like MAFs) and gets into the engine oil. Most filter oils are silicone, so this is the element that shows up on used oil analyses.

In other words, unless the factory specs an oiled foam/gauze filter, stick to paper.

That makes sense. Especially affecting the sensors. I wondered about that after reading about cleaning the MAF. Always best to follow the KISS principle. It came with paper keep it paper.

Well buy me a book and send me to school. I creeped on some high performance blogs - they don't like the oiled cotton filters either, particularly those engines with MAF sensors. So, going back to paper or a "dryflow" filter. The AEM Dryflow seems to be well represented if desiring a reusable filter.

    No mods whatsoever!
I went with an AFE pro dry S, after reading about MAF sensor issues with K&N. I may clean mine also and see it it helps any. The link wouldn't open for me. Is it electric contact cleaner?

An un maintained K&N on an atv will flow almost as much dirt as air. I've seen a few intakes caked with silt, just before I rebuilt the engine for burning oil. If the same holds true for our trucks, I'd stick with a dry type for sure.

I picked up a can at Autozone: I think I read somewhere that the MAF sensor itself is made of glass so have to be careful
