Blazze I think you will be well within the safe limits of your truck. I regularly tow a tt a little larger than the one you are looking at. Don't get stupid, use a sway bar with wdh and brake controller and you will be fine.

I would say you will be well over your TV GVWR. I currently pull a Jayco X17Z with a GVWR of 3500. Wet weight currently puts me at 92 to 95% of my total TV GVWR and 80% of my GCVWR. I would expect most of people I see towing these bigger trailers are well over their TV GVWR. We are actually heading out tomorrow and I plan on hitting the CAT scales before I start over the pass. Should be interesting to see what my actual numbers are.

Here are mine...my Skyline Koala 18bh weighs 3160 lbs dry, this weight ticket shows 9680 lbs for truck and trailer. The sticker on door jamb of truck says truck weighs 5500 lbs...that means my body weight, the stuff in my truck and tool box, the cargo in camper and all propane water and dealer installed accessories weighs 1020 lbs. My calculations say I am 2320 lbs below my max tow capacity and my camper weighs more than the one he was asking about.

Someone can correct me if I am wrong, but that does not show an accurate picture of your true weights. You are missing your trailer axle or it has been combined in your drive axle (I sure hope that is the case because my 2015 rear GAWR is only 3110 and your report shows 7520 on the rear). To understand your true figures you need all 3 wieghts (TV Steer Axle, TV Drive Axle and the Towable Axle(s)). Then you can figure out your GVWR% by adding the steer and drive axles (GVW/GVWR). With these bigger trailers, it is really easy to hit max GVWR (not the GCVWR).

Also just to add to this, you need to be under all three TV GVWR, TT GVWR and GCVWR. I think most people only look at the TT GVWR, GCVWR and forget about the TV GVWR. Keep in mind that if you have a WDH, this is also going to transfer weight onto the TV so that gets added into the GVW and well as passengers and cargo. Here is a worksheet:

I really can't scientifically argue the point without more detailed scale info, however, with tandem trailer axles, wdh and airbags that have ride height back to unweighted, electric trailer brakes and controller, being well under total capacity and the feel and handling of the truck at or above legal highway speeds I am comfortable with the trailer size and weight and the truck's ability to safely handle it.

As you can see in my profile picture (taken by a photo service btw) I am towing down the "Tail of the Dragon", one of the curviest roads in the country. There are some youtube videos out there if you want to check it out. I have also towed through the gorge on I-40 between Knoxville TN and Asheville NC, and have towed from Knoxville to the Gulf Coast among many other trips. I am comfortable and confident with the set-up.

If this set-up will not allow for towing around 4,000 lbs I don't see how our trucks could be rated for 6500.

Hello folks! I am new to TW but not new to Toyota trucks, Tacoma's or towing. I used to have a 2006 Tacoma TRD OR but traded it for a Corolla when my new job was an hour drive one way. Anyway, that left me with my wife's 97 4Runner LTD for towing. I installed a brake controller on it and it tows my 16' tandem axle trailer loaded with timbers from the saw mill a hundred miles away. I had done this dozens of times before one time on the way home I stopped at the farm supply and picked up 6 bags of fertilizer, threw them in the back, just to add to my tongue load. They had a scale there and I drove it on and asked the guy inside for my weight. I have been drawing these loads for a number of years with no problems and with confidence in the truck. If anything, it could use a bit more power but it wasn't bad. So when the guy told me my weight was 10700 lbs, I was flabbergasted! I didn't realize I was so grossly overloaded! On the other hand I was proud of the wee 4Runner with its new found esteem. Keep in mind folks, with these loads, I stayed under 55 mph.

Well, running over someone with over 5 tons at 55mph makes them just as dead as hitting them at 550mph. Most wrecks happen at vehicle weight alone at less than 20mph, and will total cars. The amount of energy a vehicle carries at 5mph is pretty significant, the amount it carries at 55mph is really substantial. You're a little more than double what the parts were designed to control reliably and repeatedly.

Tow ratings aren't based around what the vehicle can move, I can probably move a house with a vw bug. They're based (more or less) on what the vehicle can stop.

Thanks Indy. This is why my trailer has electric brakes. Stopping was not an issue at all. Also, since this revelation, I have reduced my load size out of fear of getting pulled over by the MTO. I have had smaller loads on smaller trailers and had to turn around to go back to the saw mill to have them proportion the load because it was not stable. My point is that it's not always about weight. There are many factors that determine how safe or unsafe a particular setup my be. Also, just because a load rating is 6500 lbs or whatever, doesn't mean you can tow it safely at 80 mph or even 60 mph for that matter. Experience matters as well.

I love that travel trailer. The slide out bed is awesome. It has to really add some nice floor space.

Yeah it was the one camper that had everything we wanted and not over 30 ft love the layout slide out bed also allowed us to install a very comfortable memory foam mattress with a little trimming.

I tow a Coachman Clipper 17 ft, 2700 dry weight , 4500 loaded for camping , my taco is 2006 4 door 4x4 , trd with towing package, and it pulls fine , mostly Florida roads , but I can feel that the engine struggles, believe is not a "peace of mind experience" you have way to much trailer for the Tacoma, just thing if your u-join breaks/drives shalf , of you overheat the tranny , no need for headaches.

Get a Tundra. By the time you tow this and put cargo and people in, you are over the GVWR.

Also, towing in Florida is nothing like towing in Colorado. If you wanna go places near and wide, get a bigger truck or a smaller trailer.

Not sure who you're replying to but I tow a trailer that weighs 5,000 to 5,500lbs loaded in the mountains regularly. Sure it'd be nice to have more power but the truck is perfectly capable within the tow rating.

I think you would be pushing the limits...........that is a heavy trailer for the Taco. Can you tow it; Absolutely, should you........NO. It will not be safe. Just because people have a hitch doesn't mean you can tow anything you want. However, you see way too many vehicles overloaded and people do not have a clue.

The best is the "dealer said it was ok and would be fine"
