I am going to convert my '06 PreRunner 4.0L ext. cab to a 4wd by the time i start college this coming fall semester. I know what half of you are thinking: "just sell your prerunner and a 4wd." I dont want to. Say what you wish, but i just want to keep my truck. Its my first truck, runs great, will be paid off in 2 years or less, and being able to say that i converted it to 4wd would make me proud of myself and my truck. I already have a good idea of how its done and what i need. But most of the threads and videos were on 1st gen taco's. Anybody able to give me a list pf parts needed so i can double check myself and be 100% sure i am ready when i get everything? Also, some pointers would be nice. All comments appreciated

Well for one you're going to need a diff, hubs, spindles, axles, 4wd tranny unless you can swap torque converters, a front or modified driveshaft, and probably some other electrical things.

All but those electrical things i already have written down. What electrical stuff do i need? Or is it possible to get a j-shift for the transfer case?

Well that's the thing I'm not entirely sure of considering I'm a 1st gen. So I'll leave that for someone to answer, but from what I understood there's much more to it on a 2nd gen conversion.
And the j shift was for 1st gens.

A few OE parts from fancy trucks
IMHO, it would be worth looking for a donor vehicle. One hit hard in the rear, side or even 'gently' rolled. Rusted out frame. Blown motor. Any number of options, as long as the parts you need are intact.

All needed parts in one place, cheap purchase price, ability to look/document before moving, and other parts to collect/save or sell to recoup some funds.

This! Check salvage yards websites, auction sites, etc. Who knows, not only will it be easy to have them all there to swap out but it could end up being a lot cheaper if you find the right truck for a good deal.

Don't bother with the computer. Get a transfer case from an fj cruiser. It's a j-shift and is way easier than figuring out the electrical stuff. I did it with the stock tcase and made my own computer and it was a pain in the ass. I wish I just would have cut a hole in the floor for the shifter and got the fj tcase

I was going to do this but it is too much work for the 2nd gen's. In my Opinion, Just get a 4x4. If your truck is modified, bring it to stock. Then sell it or trade it. The more stock it is, the more people it will be appealing to.

However, if you are set in your ways, and you have an extra $10,000.00 laying around, hit up Rock Solid Toys (@awsumdc ), wyatt can help u

Yes as long as the fj tcase came from the same transmission type as the one you'll put it behind. I.E. If you'll be using an automatic 4wd transmission then you need an fj tcase from an automatic. The input shafts are different between the auto and manual
