    Hello folks,

I purchased my first Tacoma ever this past Jan. I will be in the Outer banks, NC this June and may drive on the beach. Of course I have 4X4, but I am worried my OEM tires that came on the truck may be an issue on the beach. They are 265, 65, 17 inch Firestone Destination LE2's. I was looking at getting a set of Bridgestone KO2's but they are $1,145 installed. They will only offer me up to $100 per trade in on my OEM tires, so I was hoping they may be good enough for beach driving until I need new tires. What is your experience and recommendation? Thank you for your input as I am new to 4X4's and Tacomas.

By the way, the KO2's were 275, 65, 17. 10 mm wider than my factory tires. I was told they wouldn't have issues with rubbing, etc. on a stock 2016.

Anytime you drive on sand you need to air down to about 10-12 psi To get a bigger foot print and allow the tires to float not dig in and bury yourself to the frame

Just don't be a retard and drive in the ocean. No one wants to buy a used Tacoma that was soaked in salt water.

Check out discounttiredirect.com They ship for free. I got 4 General Grabber AT2s for $600 and another $100 to mount them. Then I turned around and sold my stock tires on CL for $300. My new tires kick ass in sand!

Also have a recovery /tug strap with you so if you do get stuck you can be pulled out . Another is taking a shovel and old used floor mats , semi truck mud flaps . The mud flaps can be placed in front of or behind the tires to allow for better traction

Air down and you should be good, just don't get cocky and dig yourself into a hole.

Air down to no less than 8PSI - drive slow and steady with momentum and do not do donuts.

On sand the tread pattern isn't that important. In fact an aggressive mud tire is more of a disadvantage that ordinary street tires.

If you don't have a locker or limited slip rear basically an open diff you can do this trick ......

Engage you e -brake a couple clicks , this will create enough friction it will send equal power to both axles . This is commonly called a poor man's locker . Just remember once you've regained foward momentum to disengage the e brake

    Doesn't that ruin the brake?

You are only doing that long enough to get unstuck.

Not if used just long to get your forward momentum going then disengage the e brake

What year truck is this? Can you turn off the traction control?

The best mud tires are narrow "pizza cutters" with stiff sidewalls that will cut through the mud and get to solid ground. For sand you want a much wider tire that can keep you on top of the sand. I know some guys use paddle type tires for sand racing. But those aren't mud tires. For general use a wide, tire with an all terrain or even street tires work better than a true mud tire which tends to just dig into sand.

What I found that works awesome in the sand are BFG All Terrains and again aired down to no less than 8psi

Glue a ring of flip-flops around the tires and you should be OK.

Spent 1978 summer vacation on Ocracoke and dad drove our '69 T-bird on the beach with airing down. Yep, got stuck a bunch (usually at the beach entrances), but got a lot further than I ever expected in that heavy car with street tires. A Taco with ground clearance, 4wd and aired down LE2's should be ok.
