I am considering buying one of these new trucks. I had a 2006 TRD Offroad before and it was a strong tough work truck. I am currently using a 1997 4Runner for my work truck including drawing a 16 ft tandem axle trailer.
The 4Runner is a tough truck but lacks power and enough rear suspension to handle tongue load.
I will expect it to draw maximum load about 30 times per year. Will this new truck handle it or should get another 2nd generation Tacoma?

Some are going to differ because they think the 4.0 L is a stronger motor than the new Tacoma motor. I think you'll be fine but getting up to speed won't be as easy as it is in your 4 runner

The 4Runner has only 190 hp and 220 lb-ft of torque. The 2016 Tacoma numbers are much higher than this so it should be better.

I used my 2013 DC Sport LB as a work truck and to haul a tandem axle tool trailer with no problems. I'm planning to do the same thing with my 2016 OR. I did have a brake controller on it, which is a "must".

Your right I was thinking the newer body style. The older ones had a 3.4 L. He should be fine then

I took one for a test drive a few weeks ago... I thought it was a little lazy off the start but after the revs were up it was a rocket. This made me thick the engine was not appropriate for a truck. Just my opinion.

You are not alone in this sentiment.

I think they did a pretty good job overall with the upgrade but I would have been much happier had they offered the 1GR-FE as an optional engine for those that use the truck for work and are not too concerned about fuel mileage. Not that there has been a huge improvement from what I'm hearing.

I liked my 1grfe for towing but the frame, leaf springs and brakes left some to be desired.

I'd probably be happiest in a current 4runner.

Yes HP is greater but it's really only 1ft/lb less Torque from the 4.0L. Torque matters most when hauling and towing (see Diesels for heavy duty stuff) Most drivers are averaging MPG in the 18 to 19mpg range with the new 3.5L which is not much of any improvement from the 2nd gen. I don't think the 3rd gen is any functional improvement over the 2nd gen as far as Work Truck capability goes. Tailgate is nicer? I'd go with a V8 if I was using it as a work truck. Interior fit and finish is a definite upgrade over the 2nd gen.
