I have a TRD O/R with manual transmission. Today I was parked facing up a grassy hill towing my garden trailer, and I used Clutch Start Cancel to take off in 4Lo to get up and out. It worked well. Nice feature.

Originally I thought Clutch Start Cancel was just a way to start and warm up the truck on cold mornings without getting in. But it's not for that. Has anyone else tried it?

I have only used mine for the cold morning thing mentioned above. Some glorious day I will find myself in the situation it is actually meant for though!

Used it when it stalled and I couldn't let it roll back at all in a ditch

So what was the Clutch Start Cancel originally meant for? I thought it was something the first owner put in to make it easy to start in the mornings.

It's used when the truck csna roll back. You can use the starter to move forward

Not to hi-jack this thread, but I have a question related to the clutch start cancel feature...

Is it normal for the engine to turn over real slowly when using it? (I'm assuming not) When I press the CSC button and turn the key, the motor chugs a couple times like its struggling before coming to life, definitely not a clean 1 2 3 turnover like it does when starting normally (with the clutch).

I have an '04 btw...just got it last month and everything about it runs fine except for the clutch start cancel feature apparently

Are you talking about limping it in gear or starting in neutral? In gear, I have not tried it so maybe I shouldn't even answer, but I have a theory. In my theory yes it is normal for it to crank slower. When you are normally starting the engine there is no load on it. With a load the starter is working against more resistance and will therefore crank slower.

If you are talking about starting the truck in neutral with the CSC button then I don't think it makes sense for them to be related. All it does is bypass your clutch switch which basically completes a circuit allowing the truck to start. There should be no difference in how the engine actually starts. If it is the button the only thing that would make sense to me is that the connection through the button is loose and coming on and off contact as the engine cranks.

The purpose of the clutch start cancel is to move the truck using the starter as your source for movement. The turnover is slow because the starter is supposed to be moving the truck.
Basically on a hill or sticky situation put the truck in 1st gear, (2hi,4hi,4lo) doesnt matter. Then turn the key and keep holding it do not stop like you would if starting the truck. You will hear the starter and the truck will slowly move... You can also apply some gas and move faster thus starting the truck and no need to hold key in start position any longer.

Ah, good to know, sounds like what I'm experiencing is normal then. I'm new to this so I wasn't sure if it was an issue or not, thanks guys!

When I tested it out (the only time I've tried) it was starting up so slowly I got nervous and just stopped, put the clutch in and started it normally. Since I'm bypassing the starter it sounds like what I experienced wasn't anything out of the ordinary, also I'm pretty sure I left it in neutral when I tried using the CSC feature rather than having it in gear. I'll give it a go again tomorrow and report back.
