Hello to the Tacoma Cap / Shell adventure people,

Im looking into purchasing a new cap for my 2013 Tacoma 4x4 Extra Cab 4 cylinder SR5. I have some questions... I understand this is going to add some weight but Im wondering how much exactly? How much will say a 100R Leer or similar with Roof Rack weigh? Has anyone seen major MPG diff with just a Cap on (No Extra Gear)? Im looking for a basic fit, cab high, sliding windows, and Roof Rack to cart snow boards in the winter and Paddle Board n surf boards in the summer. My main priorities are no leaks, durable for cold, very cold winters as I live in Northern Maine. Id like to keep the Cap on year round and dont mind doing a little extra to keep it snug. Any serious insulation ideas? Are slider windows more leak proof than windoors? How / What should I be doing to prep or keep the Cap secure to the truck for say several years to come. Also, what brand is the best? Any dealers in Maine, Mass or CT people like? Lastly, should I be modifying my springs / suspension for long distance travel with gear in the back. I would be sleeping in the back for those nice summer nights. Basically looking to start adventuring it up!!! Any tips on spur of the moment SAFE long travel sleep in the back ideas? Safe spots/ideas to park n sleep for the night? Anything major Im not thinking of for adventuring in my Tacoma?

Cant wait for the summer!!! Thanks a bunch ahead of time...

A cap on your truck is great, I had one on every truck I owend. I have a snug top, weights about 200#. I have a 2.7,5spd, not to much of a hit on gas. The vented windoors to me are a must, access to gear, and air movement, I sleep in mine alot, about 3 weeks a year. Get a tailgate seal, Amazon, helps with water coming in and bugs. My best advice is not to so much for price as a good installer/ dealer. Snugtop,Leer,ARE ,are all good ones. Get the carpet headliner, helps with condisation when sleeping in it. I have a 12 volt outlet, and a led light, constant hot direct from the truck battery. Before you install the cap pull your plastic bed rail caps and silacone under them, keeps water out at car wash, hope this helps, good luck, post a pic when you get it.

Hey..I'm on the same page a you....Aluminum is the way to go considering the weight & the 2.7...I'm opting for a Leer Contractors cap with barn doors, sliding windows & basic roof rack...about $2600. give or take...It can be insulated & wired. Fiberglass caps are heavy, in addition to the weight you will carry, might make you stressed out....I have a 2014 access cab 2.7 A/T 4x4 & the only complaint is its gutless...so every ounce I can spare I will...There should be a Leer dealer in your area...Good Luck...

i agree with this 100% I have a 2013 2.7l auto NO cap or tonneau I am not for going any kind of lid on the bed because of the weight decreasing my trucks performance. if it was a necessity I would look to get the lightest weight cap available probably aluminum but also these are not quite as good looking as the fiberglass caps but weigh a lot less, aluminum would be the way to go. if you use it for camping maybe a bed tent or collapsible shell would be the way to since its removable not permanent.http://www.autoanything.com/truck-tents/10A50603.aspx or http://www.autoanything.com/hitch-bed-accessories/bestop-supertop-truck-bed-camper-shell

Safety is my priority...I'll be using my cap for road trips/camping..There will be nights in the wilderness & Wal-Mart parking lots, and anywhere in between....I want to lock myself in...Also would like the protection of a firearm but that's another topic...I agree the aluminum cap may not be as fancy as a fiberglass but need to consider practically...I chose the 2.7 for its simpleness, not that its all that simple, but I can check & change the tranny fluid, or water pump with out a Toyota Masters degree. I've heard & read of enough overnight horror stories that getting to the cab without getting out of the bed is a major concern...Given these thoughts I would shy away from any fabric shelter.....But that's me....

If you want a solid cap Aluminum would be it, cause the fiberglass will look better but weighs considerable more I would assume, I put a DeeZee HD bed mat in my bed weighs only 35-40lbs. but believe it or not it effected the trucks performance, adding a few hundred pounds of weight would drastically effect the performance, handling, mpgs in my opinion having a 2.7l. Also there are lockable storage boxes to safetly? keep articles in.
