Best Configuration for higher resale for 2016 Tacoma?

    Hello everyone.
I tried doing a search but didn't come across anything regarding the newer 2016 model. I know I want a brand new tacoma, and I am not too picky on the configurations. Which model/trim/config do you think will yield a higher resale value down the road?

TRD anything and 4x4. Higher packages hold value better from my experience.

According to early Toyota corp numbers from a dealer planning meeting, only 4% of Tacoma's produced will be TRD OR DCLB 4WD, so that being the most rare and evidenced here the most sought after will likely be the crown jewel of the 3rd gens along with the upcoming TRD pros.

I have this friend who told me that Tacoma's resale value is so high, that your Roth IRA goes UP when you drive it off the lot. True story.

(I would also vote the TRD models, and 4x4. Also I think since manual transmissions are becoming rare, they may be worth more to the right buyer down the road. But that's a risk, since auto's are so popular. Source: me who sold last two vehicles after 5 years and 3 years of use for 65% and 75% of purchase price, respectively. Both MT cars).

I got offered $26k for mine with almost 40k. Paid $29,500 OTD.

I walked, but that's not an uncommon offer. I could sell private party for just about what I paid, not including upgrades of course.

Seriously, if you are considering selling it before you even buy it, why buy it?

I think the limited makes it fall off the curve. This is based on no actual research, but I feel like the premium you pay to get a limited when new, would not be realized when it comes time to trade it in.

    Actual $?

    Percentage of retained expenditure?

Down the road? How long & how much use?

My guess is the overall, net, lowest amount you'll spend is the cheapest Tacoma you can buy.

Have you looked up lease residual values? That may be your best bet for finding which configuration & model might retain its value best.

SR 4x4 utility package manual trans was my guess so that is what I bought. Try to find a comparable older version of what you buy and see what it costs.

In every other make of vehicle, the options depreciate more than the base vehicle. I do think the one that will depreciate the most is the limited.

    This guy get it!

Base 4x4 SR out the door for $26k, Limited for $40k.

If both retain 50% after 5 years it's ruth 13k with the SR or 20k with the Limited.

But you still need to be happy with it or that X$ a month won't matter.

Why not buy what you want. You shouldn´t be buying a truck for the next owner, you need to get what you like and need.
If you want the TRD OR, but decide to get a Limited because it will yield a better resale value, you will not be happy driving the Limited.
If you never use 4wd but get one anyway due to a better trade value later, then find out your 4wd is not working properly because it never got exercised and the repairs need to be done before trade in or selling, that wasn´t a very good decision was it.
It´s a Tacoma, you get what you need/want, and when the day comes you are ready to trade up to something else, it will still have a decent resale value and you will be happy you got what YOU wanted, not what the next potential owner wants.

I think 4x4 long beds will be in demand. I sold my 2012 dclb sport 4x2 for 24k. It only had 30k miles on it. Looking forward to keeping my 2016 for the long haul. I know the resale will be there. There are used 2016s selling for near msrp in California due to limited supply.

Eventually everything is sold, it may be by your heirs, but it will be sold at some point. You make your money at resale by making wise choices when you purchase.

A 4X4 DC will be worth the most money down the road. The TRD package may well not bring in as much percentage wise compared to a base truck, but the difference is going to be close. My 9 year old TRD DC 4X4 with 170,000 miles on it will still bring somewhere between 50-60% of what I paid for it on a dealers lot. Trade value is about 45% of what I paid.

Buy what you want/need, not based on what you think might bring the highest return on investment.

No, I make money at work. I buy a vehicle to use. I buy what I want and what I need. If I even remotely think I'm going to sell it soon after buying it, I need to rethink buying it. It makes no difference to me what it is worth once I'm through using it. If I do end up selling it, I'll get whatever the market bears. I won't be planning for X amount of money many years from now when I sell it.

I glad to see others share my point of view. I was beginning to think I was the only one that buys a vehicle for myself and never thinks about value later in life. Every vehicle I've owned has been in my possession for at least 6 years. My dodge Dakota going on 11 years now. The only one I owned for less than two years was a Mazda B2300, and that was because my daughter was born and a regular cab truck wouldn't work anymore.

Yeah, resell is not even on my list of things I look at when I buy a vehicle.
Now, I am sure there are many reasons that it would be. If I was leasing for business/tax purposes, I'm sure residual value would be an important consideration, but not the most important. A vehicle has to meet your needs or it doesn't matter what it's worth.
