So, moved to Arizona two weeks ago and bought myself a Taco. Love it. Joined up here at TW and learning a lot.

However, this weekend I found some sand and got my baby stuck. like buried to the hitch stuck. I got out with a shovel and passerby, but if they hadn't came when they did it would have been a pain to get out. So...what do I need to handle the terrain here in AZ?

So far my research has found:
    Bigger tires
    Tow Strap (have one)
    Hi-Lo Jack
    Wheel tracks/2x6 boards
    bow shackles
Air compressor and tire pressure gauge
    Winch and sand anchor

What am I missing? I obviously can't afford all of this at once but I want to be safe and responsible. Thanks for your time and advice.

Thank you! I didn't expect to find sand where I went, but now that I've found it everywhere I'm going to have to learn how to handle it better.

I also was reading that even aftermarket filters don't do a great job with the dust, do most people get a filter cover?

    THIS!!!! x1,000,000

Wheeling alone, 4wd or 2wd, is dangerous for many reasons. Even the most experienced guys with modded trucks and 4wd have gotten themselves in trouble and had to raise the rescue flag. Having some rescue gear and a few buddies can make getting stuck or broken down, a fun and easy fix. Where do you think all the tall tales over beer come from.

Going out alone, we all do it from time to time, you need to focus on water, food, and communications. In AZ, if you think you have enough water for a couple hours of playing in the dirt, double it. Always take some food, granola bars, etc. Your cell phone doesn't work ever where: CB, Ham radio, Spot, Sat phone, etc... is essential to being out on your own. Walking out is not easy for the most physically fit person with desert survival skills.

Jump over into the AZ BS thread and make some wheeling buddies. We all go out every once and a while, sometimes wheeling, some times for beer. Just know, we love our flannel, beards, and midgets in AZ (not necessarily in that order).

What part of the state are you in?

I already have a list! My poor wallet.

I had a shovel, there were no rocks nearby and I got stuck. This is why I'm asking for advice on what's needed to avoid that again.

    I agree!

I wasn't planning on anything serious, just scouting some back roads for shooting spots when this happened, I would've never gone on a trail without others. I had a survival and rescue kit...for Colorado weather. The blankets and hand warmers don't do much for what's out here. I had food and water. Need to work on CB radio though.

    I'm in fountain hills.

We just did a big mod day in FH. You're also on the way for those of us that head up 87 on a regular bases. Reach out to @Techoma he is also in FH, has an awesome truck.

There a a lot of guys running CB in AZ, but Ham radio is huge in the 4x4 community too. Tons of repeaters connecting almost every square inch on AZ. Plus a few connecting to S. CA and one up to Montana. If you have any interest in it, there are a couple Ham threads on here as well as www.4x4ham.com.

Good luck and hope to see you on the trail soon.

PS- Save those hand warmers and blankets. You'll need them in the desert in the winter.

Duh... aren't you one of em?!!!!

The FH Mod day was at my place. Jake, I'll PM you my # and addy. We're in the same slums, so if you do that crap again, just give me a ring and I'll head out to find ya. Although I am also a PreRunner, I'm pretty good with the skinny pedal and have a good feel on how to keep her rolling. I also always carry my little recovery trunk which has a few necessities in it. The truck has on board air, tire patch kit, front\rear winch, tow strap, and CB. I'll get ya out and it'll be our little PreRunner secret (until the next campout)!!!!!!

I can't wait to meet up, and I'd love to get into hamming! I've just started studying for my license(s) and I just got a receiver to listen in on the waves. Was trying to figure out what frequencies are used.

Tons of info on repeaters at https://www.w7ara.org/ it's not a club, but an association that manages dozens of repeaters in the state.
