Yo, all......I was pondering buying an aluminum cap from a 2004 Tacoma, and putting it on my 2014. Not looking to spend large on one, since we'd need it for only a few months of the year.
Somebody said that older style boxes didn't come with composite liner, and that an older style topper's clamps wouldn't fit. Any ideas? I can only assume that I'd be able to jerry-rig so sort of set up.

How wouldn't it fit? Length? Width? Or clamping?

First gens are small compact pickups. Second gens are mid sized pickups. The dimensions of the bed are completely different.

Ok, thanks. I'll wait to hear back from seller regarding dimensions he comes up with..... So far all I know is that it is for a six foot box, which is what I have. I'm guessing width of cap is what will be smaller than what is the wider second gen setup. Dang.... Was really hoping to land this one, cause or the lightweight aluminium aspect.

I just picked up my new used aluminum cap, originally came off '04.... now fitted to my 2104 long bedder. Size isn't perfect--- a tad too narrow to fit to composite bed liner; as well, it seems to be about 1/2" too long at the back. No probs there--- fix up with a 1/2" square tube aluminum. If folks say it can't be done, well, it's time to get outside of the box. I still need to perfect the best layout for clamping....will post pics once that's completed. I only plan on using cap/topper a few times a year, but happy I saved a couple two three thousand by purchasing used.
I advise that for those that chose to save a few grand....lots of caps are out there, but you need to do basic fitting to your Tacoma, before deciding it's too big/too small etc.

I don't know where you live that used caps cost that much money. I paid $400 for a color matched cap in perfect condition that was made to fit my truck. I didn't have to rig up anything. Could have got a contractor cap for half that much.

Up in Canada, they charge large for good 'ol American products and a weak Canadian Loonie. It sucks no doubt. New from dealer is 2800-3200 bucks.

Pardon the double doubles. Never posted photos ever before. Not perfect, but should get the family a bit more space.

Took a while to get around to it, but managed a secure fit, and modded standard cap clamps to suit. Replaced 2" foam seal on bottom of cap, and it's as dry as can be, even after travelling through a 1" rainstorm.
By trade I am an engineer, and it was only a matter of time to figure out how to solve the dimension issue. Most fun of all was fiddling through the challenge, and driving neighbours crazy with the 4 1/2" grinder!
Nice little aluminum cap means it's a one-man-job to install or remove (made a stand for it outta some cedar poles, which can double as a small shelter for the lawn mower or snow blower, depending on the season).....

If you get a vision, get 'er done!
