fuel gauge intermittently working,Then check engine light??

    Hello .I have a 99 tacoma sr5, 230.000km. The fuel gauge started to go to empty even though lots of fuel, then stuck on full. next day the check engine light comes on. I've researched it ,seems bad fuel sending unit is common problem.I'll be removing the tank and test the sending unit. I'm wondering why the check engine light would come on. Is there a sensor in the sending unit maybe? any input would be appreciated . thanks
