Hey everyone, not too long ago my oil pickup clogged and caused oil starvation. Took the motor apart and saw sludge everywhere from previous owners not keeping up with maintenance i guess. Anyways, i guess some of said sludge or metal shavings or something went through the oil passageways and caused these scratches in the cams. I'm wondering what you guys think i should do, will it be ok to clean up and put back together since there are oil grooves in the caps right around where the scratches are? Or will i need to be looking for new cams?

just fyi... you'd do well to change your thread subject line from "Question" to something a bit more descriptive. Will maximize your chances of getting relevant help.

First things first. Find the previous owner and back hand the shit out of them for poor maintenance.
Second, Go get a big container like a plastic clothes storage bin with a snap on top. Put one or both of the heads in and pour diesel fuel on top of them. Buy/grab a stiff bristled paint brush and clean the hell out of them.
Once clean, let the drip dry over night. While drying, go get a Haynes Manual if you don't have one so that you will have the specs on the cams and get some Plastigage. Use the plastigage to measure the distance between the caps and the cam bosses. Measure the cam lobes to see if they are within spec.

The inside block passages are going to need a thorough cleaning.

yeah, I would pull those heads off and clean them thoroughly. That's the straight up gnarliest top end I've ever seen.

Yeah, definitely the most abused engine ive seen also, and i bought the truck with it . But it was funny, sounded like it was brand new, no weird noises and ran perfect with 217k on the odometer.
And Cd20H ill buy a container and start cleaning things up. I was going to disassemble the head and take it to a machine shop and let them tank it like i did the block.
I downloaded a pdf from somewhere, but ill probably get the haynes manual sometime this week just to have since i don't plan on getting rid of the truck anytime soon.
Any input on the scratches in the spots on the cam that sit in the head?

Since your using a machine shop, have them check everything that needs to be checked. They should have all the tools.
