Have been experiencing a real sluggish 2.7 l, begin to hear rattle underneath, ordered a new oem converter assembly, disassembled and replaced it, runs much better and gas mileage has come up greatly.

^Welcome to TW. Was this the full extent of your diagnosis to isolate the problem before spending $$$$ on an OE cat? Any temp measurements at cat inlet/outlet?

Just going on my past mechanical experience and gut, when 3 gear feels like your pulling 10k in a empty truck I knew something was holding it back, (back pressure). It was gradual then sudden after I knocked around on the front cat. Rear one was still solid enough to bring 8 bucks at salvage yard.

There is a service campaign for this. The dealer can fix for free, you might be able to get your money back. There is a thread with the details here somewhere

Edit- might not go all the way back to 05. Not sure on that part

This is very true. I had the EXACT issue going on with my truck. I just so happened to receive a letter in the mail saying there was a recall in the cat. They replaced it with no charge. Truck started running great again!

I'd call the dealership and give them your vin and they'll tell you if your truck is a problem.

Not a recall, but a SSC ( Special Service Campaign ) and is not applicable to the older Tacoma:

Special Service Campaign (SSC) F0U - Certain 2010-2014 Model Year Tacoma 2TR-FE Vehicles - Exhaust Pipe Replacement for Catalytic Converter
