If you are running the stock head unit I'd highly suggest some type of processor. Aftermarket head unit won't need it. Most people buy processors and don't know what to do with them.

    This all sounds awesome!
I have an older, used system that I want to install in my new TRD OR, that does NOT have JBL.

Can any of you please tell me the specs on the non-JBL speakers? I know there are 6 of them, and I believe two are 6x9's and two are 1" tweeters.
What size are the other two back-seat speakers, and what power/ampage/wattage are they all designed for?

Should I just get rid of and replace them with new speakers?
Or, will powering them with my 4-channel amp, equalizer, and bridged 500W amp -powering a 10" sub in mahogany box- be enough?
I kind of hate to have some guys tear the doors apart; and cannot stand rattles and other annoying noises from loose/broken plastic; and really hate to change the head unit...

    More info. please?
What are the differences in JBL and non-JBL speakers in the 16's?
What are the specs of each? Thank you.

Damn dude, that's a lot of work. Wow.
How much does that stuff cost? Have you applied it before? Looks like a lot of time and effort, but I too am into this.

I believe an equalizer will make it all even better. Way better, especially for your sub and bass.
However, I may be wrong. Mine is Kenwood.

Also, something everyone should consider, which I haven't yet seen mentioned, is that the sound of your bass, woofer, and sound system in general, including unwanted rattles and vibrations, is the actual box your woofer is in, how it is designed, and where it is actually placed in the truck.

An 8" thick, or 10" thick flat-box is not going to produce the ideal sound your woofer can produce. And, putting that in a plastic cubby, behind your seat, is not going to help, either.

I know everyone wants to save space, but the bigger the woofer box, to a certain extent, and the better the design and materials it's made with, the better the bass and sound.

For example, I have a 10" sub (powered by a 400W bridged amp) completely enclosed in a hollow 22"x15"x14" cube, that has an inverted tube, and is stuffed with pillows. The lows and the resonance are insane. Sounds so good. So clean. Also connected to this Kenwood equalizer.

Looking to swap out my stock speakers and add an amp. What do you all think about the Alpine SPR-60C and Alpine MRV F300? Not looking for anything crazy, just better overall quality. Is the amp really necessary? If not, I can get all four speakers and tweeters for $250 and self install. If the amp is needed, that would need to be done professionally and would likely be a lot more $$.

How to take the door panel off to replace the speaker:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BeVKDwHrkus

This is for a rear door. The front door is identical... the speaker size in the front is just bigger.

The stock speakers are really poor and upgrading them to a $30 set off Amazon made a huge difference. I re-used the speaker mounts in the rear.

What version of stock stereo do you have on your truck?

Also, What are the sizes that you used to replace them? I've heard that they are the same as the second gen but wanted to confirm before I buy my set. Thanks!

So I am about to get a TRD OR with the tech package with JBL. My dad has the same truck without JBL. I've had several pretty solid systems over the years - Phoenix Gold, JL and Arc Audio amps, Eclipse 8 volt head units, MB Quart, CDT and Boston Acoustics Pro components, JL and Image Dynamics subs, etc. I'm definitely an audio snob, and don't like either of the systems very much. The JBL system does seem to have a more powerful amp than the non-JBL system (running my ipod through USB it's louder at a given radio volume than his). The system sounds very mid and bass-heavy, and very muddy. Had to set bass at -4 or something like that to keep the door panels from vibrating at fairly low volume and the bass at a reasonable level. The sub definitely seemed like it's capable of putting out enough bass to suit my taste, but it's not very clean. My questions are:
    1. Could I use a signal processor and an RTA to clean up the stock signal and somehow run it back through the stock amp? Or is the stock amp an amp / processor so there's no way to change it? Simply tweaking treble, mid and bass doesn't seem to help much.
    2. If so, what would I use to do that?
    3. If not, what would I need to clean up the signal and make a decent, but not super expensive improvement while still retaining the stock head unit? New tweeters? New door speakers? Maybe a DSP and amp to run the front components and sub - like a JL 500/3? Which DSP or amp? Trying to keep it around $600 to $800 investment.

    Thanks for any input!

When he did this did he run the speed wire from HU to the amp, then run another speed wire back up but tap into the other side of the wires to send signal to the speakers? Seems like a smart idea to me.

I don't know how @Mr Marv does it. But I ran the speedwire from the HU to the amp. Then I ran normal speaker wire from the amp to each speaker putting them on separate channels. I think it was easier to just run new speaker wires rather than to try and use the old wires with the harness (if that's what you're thinking of doing). Also, proper sound deadening does make an impressive difference.

Sorry I didn't read the entire thread however I will mention I do run new speaker wire when adding an external amplifier. In any case if you are installing component speakers and do decide to run Speedwire back to the original harness you will still need additional wiring.

Any one that has pulled the stock speakers happen to know what ohm rating they are? I'm looking to replace my front and back doors with some Alpine R series (front will use 6.5 components and rear will use 6.5 coaxials) all at 4 ohms. I'll eventually (probably in 5-6 months) add an Alpine 5 channel amp and sub, but looking to go ahead and replace the doors and tweeters now. Will the stock HU handle the 4 ohms with no issues until I add the amp?

Also, any one heard the R series vs the S series? Are the R series worth the price premium? I also wonder if I'm going overboard or setting the bar too low and will not be happy with what I've bought and installed

One last question, should I skip replacing the speakers in the back doors (unhook them totally) and spend the savings elsewhere in the stereo system?

Picked up my JBL-equipped Off Road today. I have to say, other than the door rattle, I was able to find some settings that sounded pretty good to me. Good enough that I'll probably leave it alone except for maybe deadening the doors. What are people using for sound deadening? Raamat? Are there easy to install door kits for Tacomas?

For those interested - I thought this sounded pretty good. I may use an RTA or spectrum analyzer to try to find a somewhat flat curve:
Fade: +2 front (seemed to bring the front stage UP and kill some of the heavy mid-bass)
    Treble: 0
    Mid: -2 or -3
    Bass: -2 or -3

Anybody fit a premade Jl box in the storage behind the seats? Was thinking of the Jl micro sub enclosure.
