Need help to prove loss of value 2016 DCSB TRDOR

Discussion in '3rd Gen. Tacomas (2016-2023)' started by fmac112, Apr 26, 2016.

?

when considering the purchase of a used 2016 Toyota Tacoma Trdor DCSB, do major engine repairs...

  1. They don't affect my valuation of the vehicle

    53.8%
  2. They reduce my valuation of the vehicle by $1-4000

    15.4%
  3. They reduce what I would pay for the vehicle by more than $4000

    30.8%

Personally when I see a used vehicles carfax I'd rather see that it was serviced than an empty page.

I bought the 8/100 No deduct Platinum for $1050. It stays with the truck when I sell.

OP Your truck's value won't be harmed. There are a handful of OCD types that would not buy that truck. On theother hand there are a lot of 2016 buyers that are waiting for trucks STILL. The farther you get away from this repair , the better your value will hold.

I was looking at an 08 Vette yesterday that had some accident damage four years ago, That would not stop me from buying (but a leaking oil pan and wobbling harmonic balancer did) Those are a $1900+ fix. If the seller chose to fix his car, he would get better offers.

not that i have a dog in this fight, because i am against buying a new vehicle right off the lot, but if you had a warranty then i wouldnt worry about it. Thats what you paid for a warranty for.. its like insurance. do you use your car insurance every day, no..but when you have an accident or some punk ass kid hits you, its there.... You lost money when you drove a new vehicle off the lot. Plain and simple. (BTW i just checked on KBB and they dont have 2016 Tacoma as an option when looking "what is my car worth") But lets say for S's and G's, What if this was a TV for instance, in 5 years you want to sell the TV. You originally bought it for $1000, but it had to go back to Sony for a repair of some sort, when you got it back it was a practically new TV. After 5 years of use are you going to get $900 out of it, nah.. but could you get $600-650 for it, most likely. 2015 tacoma with no options other than 4x4 and v6, KBB says is worth 29K-30K... so yes, they lost a little but they are driving it and enjoying their trucks. If you keep the truck your going to loose money. A vehicle is not an investment. You are using the vehicle, which puts wear and tear on it. Just drive the truck. Someone will eventually have some sort of fix for the whistle sound. Take it to the dealer and have them go for a ride with you and make it whistle. then see what they say about it.

as far as the gasket goes, shit happens, and maybe it tore or they were just being thorough to make sure everything was right. hell if i put any new part on i replace the gasket.

Also btw there is a calculator out there that tells deprecation of a vehicle and its something like $0.12 per mile you drive. so at 6000 you are already at $720 and a vehicle can depreciate as much as 11% when you drive it off the lot. which if it was a $40,000 truck that $4,400 so now your total after 3 months is $5120...and at your current rate of driving.. your looking at $5840 less than you originally paid for your vehicle. Yes toyota holds their value but its a sickening number isnt it...

    If it was me...

do the math and just drive the truck and enjoy yourself. If you want to pursue a lawyer and get the lemon law to take effect, by all means do it, but at this point asking for them to compensate after they fixed an issue, that you paid for in a warranty, and you got a loaner, is pissing in the wind.

The only way you will "prove" loss of resale value is to sell it for less than a comparable truck is worth. Even then, good luck trying to prove that you actually worked hard enough to sell it for fair value before settling for a lower price. And even more good luck proving to any court of law that Toyota owes you anything. Resale value is not part of any warranty, implied or otherwise for any vehicle sold by any maker.

You had a major problem, Toyota fixed it and provided you a loaner vehicle while they worked. The howling is a problem that has a <$20 solution. Search for the "howling" thread and you will see that it is openings in the control arms. That thread shows you which ones to plug. You can buy a plastic plug and fix it for less than $20. I get that you are unsure about the long term reliability of the vehicle after this repair, but I am very skeptical that you have anything worthy of financial compensation to claim against Toyota.

I don't know whats more insane, people paying $40k for a tacoma, or people not expecting a vehicle to lose value as it ages.

I have the pronounced buzzing vibration in the steering wheel and floorboard at 2100-2400 RPM and the driveline shudder/low frequency vibration at lower speeds. Both have no fixes and toyota says they are normal (for now).

I also have the howling wind sound through the window seals and my brake pedal squeaks when I press down on it, but I consider these two minor issues that will be easy fixes.

I hate to say it, but I am almost positive you wouldn't win a lemon law case since they fixed your issue in a timely manner. If you went through 3 or 4 head gaskets that would be a different story, but it seems you were just unlucky and got one bad part out of many of thousands.

If you are truly unhappy, your time and money would be better spent on finding a new vehicle. You'll take a loss, but at least you wouldn't have spent money on a lawyer or filing paperwork in addition to what you'll lose on the vehicle.

OP, why have you not fixed the whistling sound yourself as outlined in this very forum? It's practically free and takes about 5 minutes.

Also, your truck was repaired as Toyota is obligated. Those repairs are covered under warranty so the only loss in value is perceived and not actual. I understand where you are coming from but you've got no real negotiating position against Toyota.

FWIW, I got the 7/100 warranty for free.

If you are in a wreck and someone else is at fault, you can get diminished value for your vehicle. To take Toyota on, you would need to go to court. I suspect you would need to prove there was a known defect. I don't really know. My suggestion would be to get everything fixed, detail it, and sell it.

I would request the 7yr/100K Toyota Platinum warranty. I got that and my first payment refunded because they had to replace my rear diff at 450 miles. My first Toyota too and they had it for 12 days. I was really nice and just told them that's what it would take to make me feel comfortable after dealing with all this on a brand new truck. I think that's a legit request for peace of mind.

BTW, they gave me the warranty for free, with $0 deductible and it's free to transfer the warranty 1 time, which will help with resale value if I ever do sell it.

Im glad you took the preventative maintenance route. The way I took when buying my truck was to give Toyota the benefit of the doubt and not buy extended warranty. If there was a major issue within the first 10k, I would put in a ticket with corporate and ask for extended warranty. If they didn't want to, I would drive it for 50k while they provide the warranty services then sell the truck right before the standard warranty expires.

In your position, I would ride the roller coaster and see how far the truck gets you. You bought the warranty, just bring it in and let Toyota spend more $$ on it. If you're worried about resale value. Sell it to a dealer like car max or whatever and tell them it still has extended warranty. They'll give you gold for it. That's the benefit of owning a Toyota. You can dump it at the stealership and give them a taste of their own medicine. And I'm only saying this because dealers have ripped off many customers before. A penny earned will be a penny lost.

Your best best as others said is to get legal counsel.
If you can prove loss of value you might be able to get the difference but expecting a new truck is pretty outrageous.

    Best of luck

Your original 3/36 covered the repair. My suggestion is 1. Cancel that $2500 extended. (The way to do it is on the back of the contract.) That will give you $$ back to cover any diminished value & take less time & energy to fight an uphill battle. 2. Find the DIY on the whistle that @swimmer suggested. My 2013 still whistles slightly on gusting crosswinds even after doing the fix fwiw.
    3. Before your original 3/36 warranty is up, drive & enjoy your 2016! If needed : Reevaluate & decide to keep or sell/trade at that point. If you keep, find another place to buy your extended warranty again, maybe use where unchained5150 or tacobella bought. If your in Mass, Troy can hook you up. Good luck OP.

If you like throwing your money away, follow this advice. You have no proveable claim of lost value until you sell the truck. Even if you can prove loss of value, Toyota has never implied or expressed that their warranty covers resale value of the truck. They have done exactly what their warranty requires them to do, which is fix the truck, at no cost to you, in a timely manner. Lemon laws will not apply for a one-time repair. Good luck finding a lawyer who will take the case. If you do, I am betting they want to charge by the hour instead of getting a share of whatever you recover from Toyota. The lawyer will make good money listening to Toyota laugh at your claims.

Look, all sarcasm aside, you have had one repair issue that has been addressed by the book without objection by Toyota. You have one other than can be fixed DIY with parts costing <$20. I get that reading all the various and sundry unexplained "issues" people bring up here can make anybody a bit mental. But you should take a step back and look at what is a real problem (the one you got fixed) and what is just you or somebody else unhappy with some aspect of the truck. If that makes you so unhappy that you want to sell or trade the vehicle, then by all means do so, and just suck it up that you are going to lose money to do it. I would suggest hanging on to the truck, and I suspect that you will find most of those "issues" really have little to no impact on how the truck actually performs. If they do cause problems, go ask Toyota to uphold their warranty and fix them. If they refuse...THEN you have a case. Until then, just drive your truck and forget about it if you can.
