I want to replace my shift knob but can't figure out how to get the stupid boot off to put my custom knob from my '14 on. Does anyone know how to remove the boot from the knob? I'd prefer not to take the whole console apart if it's not absolutely necessary. Thanks.

Removing the boot from the knob is pretty easy, it's just snapped in. Pull down on the chrome clip and it will pop out. From there you can unthread the knob. Only problem is the chrome ring is attached to the leather boot. Haven't figured that part out yet.

That's what stopped me from installing a nicer aftermarket one.

I don't have a chrome ring on mine. It's more like abs plastic under the actual shift knob. Do you spin it or just pull down? I can get the get knob to spin, but the boot spins with it and since it's a brand new truck, I don't want to snap or break anything yet.....

Thank you for the help. This was a pain in the ass, but did it. I used zip ties to hold everything in place.

What thread size is the gear shift knob on the automatic transmission? I have a 2017 TRD off road and I want to replace mine with a custom gear shift knob as well... Thank you

How did you get the chrome or abs piece out?

You have to remove the console as described above. Then pull the boot down through the bottom and turn it inside out. The chrome part is held on with a zip tie. Just cut it and the part comes out. Had to do this when I put on a B&M shift handle.IMAG4306.jpg IMAG4313.jpg

I replaced my shift knob and used a brake caliper bushing from Napa, part#82999A as a spacer between the knob and the boot and a universal tie rod end dust boot for a 9/16 shaft. It fits perfectly over the shifter shaft and holds the boot and chrome ring in place, hard to tell that it is not stock.

What purpose does the boot serve on these besides aesthetics?

^^ Keeps crap from falling down there. Do you want to pull your center console when you drop change down there? Or french fries?

I have a question about the knob. Should it be on tight or does it twist back and forth? Mine twists so I'm thinking I need to take the boot off and spin it a few times to tighten it.

should be tight. Just push down on the chrome ring and it will unsnap, give it a few turns until snug, then snap chrome ring back up to the shift knob. Easy Peasy!

Can confirm. It is still 8mm x 1.25 on the 3rd gen Tacoma automatic shifter.

If you are looking for a threaded insert to make your own shifter knob, here's a link to what I used.
