yea, if a crazy redneck can get his gun back after a drug raid it is worth it. honestly, if it is halfway valuable it is worth doing. a pawn shop can't purchase a gun in any state unless it has a serial number. if some fool steals your gun, and pawns it, you get it back, and they get busted. most criminals are to dumb to know this. when a pawn shop buys a gun, it must fill out paperwork and send to a.t.f.. if your gun is reported stolen and you have the numbers registered then there is a good chance you could get it back. i was in a pawn shop once, and a agent came in and seized several guns that had popped up stolen. the owner was pissed, b/c they get screwed. they really have no way of knowing if the gun is stolen. well, i guess if a crack head comes in with a high dollar gun, they might.

Yes, but why register the gun(s) before they are stolen? All you need to do is write down the SN, take a picture, keep the receipt and provide them to the JBTs when they fill out the Burglary paperwork. No need to tell Uncle Sam where to find the guns when the confiscations start.

why are people so freaking scared of the government, jesus you people trip me out.
your guns are safe for pete sake, a democrat gets elected and everybody thinks it is the end of the world as far as guns are concerned. the n.r.a. has way more lobbying influence than people think. your guns are not going to be taxed, i am a accountant and go to tax updates all the time. he can't even get health care to pass, one of his main running points. what makes you think he can tax your guns.

I'm not overly concerned about my guns being taken away right now. However, there have been governments through history who have taken guns away from it's citizens. Americans must be vigilant. It's not a Democrat or a Republican issue to me. Most politicians can be bought and sold like a cheap hooker. It's a Rights issue... a right both Democrats and Republicans should be willing to fight for - not a passing "hot topic" that people should be sticking their heads in the sand about.

Remember the Ruby Ridge? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruby_Ridge Janet Reno and the ATF set up a sting operation and killed innocent people. The final outcome was the government was wrong and paid him and his daughters a few million dollars for killing his wife.

The Founding Fathers wrote the 2nd amendment for a reason. The NRA was formed in 1872 for a reason. I don't register my guns for a reason. It keeps us free.

Don't get me started. (okay, I need to just relax now - lol)

lol wow this thread is the most surprising one ive read in awhile, I was under the assumption that it was highly illegal not to register your guns in the US, i can think of a dozen reasons why so I never questioned it. oh well good to know.

The only question you need to ask is "What does my state law require for the the gun I want to buy". If it requires you to register it- Then you need to ask "Do I want to risk the legal hassle if this unrigistered gun is found". If it'd not required- Fuck it. Get a good photo and all the info to keep in your records and report it missing/stolen if it ever is.

Also- I would NOT call your local sheriffs- Police are good people- but they are masters of nothing so you are just as likely to get smoke blown up your ass as you are to get a good answer. Look up your state laws regarding firearms. Most state publish a pamphlet that covers the majority of stuff. Failing that- You should be able to find an online link to the Code of State Statues or whatever your state calls it...and read the laws for your self.

if your local LEA is worth a damn...yes

when something is stolen...gun, car, boat etc...and you call the police to report it as such...they do a report that lists the item stolen, description, and SN...

those descriptors get entered into NCIC2K

at some point if the gun is found, or checked by ANY other LEA in the country...it pops up as stolen and gives the information

at that point, that LEA will contact the entering agency and get it back to you somehow or another

Don't call the Sheriff or the Police departments for legal advice. They are not always informed.

Check out the NRA's website they do have good and legal info there. That is their purpose to understand the legal issues.

Will it really make a difference if/when they come to take them if they're registered or not?

The difference in felt recoil is minimal at best if at all. I have a Mossy and my buddy has the Remmy and we both duck and turkey hunt using 3.5" shells and we both have used each others shotgun on hunts.

Exactly. Which is why I'd comply with the law in the meantime and try to save yourself some hassle (referring to the OP). If it needs to be registered...fine...doesn't affect anything. If it doesn't, then why bother?
