My 2015 Tacoma 4/4 has an intermittent clunk or thump sound when I come to a stop. Not always. Has done it since new but seems more often now with just over 16,000 miles.
I know GM had this problem also and it was the slip yoke binding on the splines.
When I asked about it at the Dealer they seemed to not acknowledge there could be a problem.
Like they never heard this complaint before. Grease the splines?
I will bring it up again at my next and last "free" oil change.

Does it feel like someone tapped your rear bumper when the "clunk" happens?

The infamous axle wrap. Had it in my older '99 Prerunner, my '04 doesn't have it yet but my mileage on it isn't very high.

The leaf springs on our trucks are notoriously weak and as they get older....axle wrap. Doesn't mean your leaf springs are broken, just that they are getting weaker and binding. When the binding releases, you hear/feel a clunk. First time it happened to me I thought I got tapped from behind by another car.

Here's a link to a good thread on it: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/goodbye-axle-wrap-mod.108316/

Too new for bad springs. Yes like someone barely tapped my rear bumper. Can feel it in my seat too.

Yeah that's definitely axel wrap. Some people feel it even in trucks with low miles, it's an issue that's plagued 1st and 2nd gen Toyotas, for some reason they've never really addressed it but probably because it's more of an annoyance than anything major. Maybe even the new ones but I haven't read about it yet. Greasing the u-joints seems to help, I know it did for me in my '99 and I never had to replace or modify the suspension. I had the guys at the local oil change shop do it for me on occasion when I took my truck in for service.

edit: again, this doesn't mean your leafs are broken or need to be replaced, try greasing the joints and see if that makes it go away.

I don't think my new u-joints have grease fittings. I know it's not anything that will cause a mechanical problem. Just an annoyance. New trucks shouldn't clunk.

Oh I agree....it's super annoying. You must still be under warranty correct? Have you brought it up with your service tech? They might know of a way to handle it with the second gens, I'm really only familiar with the earlier model Tacomas and axle wrap.

I have brought it up at the dealer before. I will again the next time I go for my oil change.
