So I changed my 245/75/16 tires to 265/70/16. Here is my observation. The new wheels are dead on with GPS and mile markers. The old wheels said I was about 2mph faster at 65 with GPS and the miles racked up faster on the odometer than I was passing mile markers on the highway. Not significant but over 100 miles.... Here is my theory. Toyota puts the steel wheels on to make your warranty expire faster.

Ok, so if you need one more reason to put bigger tires on your truck..... This is it.

How would the wheels make any difference? Isn't the only factor the outer diameter of the tires?

You should send corporate a letter and let them know you are on to them. They probably did'nt think anyone would notice.

Small wheels spin more to cover the same distance as the bigger wheel so the truck thinks it is going further with the little steel wheels than it really is.

It is the tires not the actually wheel. The 245/75/16 has a smaller circumference than the 265/70/16.

Ok, well a competing therory would be that with stock TIRES, the odo is calibrated correctly & speedo is low (as is usual on recent vehicles). And now your speedo is correct & your odo is off.

This might literally be one of the weirdest posts I have seen on this site.

The 16 is the size of the hole in the middle. 245 is the width. 75 is the percentage of side wall. Same goes for the 265.
    So the 245x.75=183.75.
    The 265x70=185.50.
The 16 inches in the middle plus the numbers in the lines above show that the 265 has a bigger diameter than the 245. Not allot, but it adds up over a long distance. 36K miles for example. Not trying to do more math, but my theory is when your odometer rolls 36k with the steel wheels, you are going to have about 34k of use meaning that your warranty will run out before you actually drive the full distance.

I just think Toyota sets all the computers up for the bigger tire and those with steel wheels pay the price.

It is the tire. If you had a 20" wheel and a 16" wheel with tires that made their circumference the same, you would register the same mileage.

So the wheel had no affect on it and it is all in tire size.

The difference in circumference between those two is less than .5%, and with the smaller 245s you would have 35,838 when the other hits 36000, so its not significant at all...
