My students are creating their Conics projects in my Advanced Algebra [Algebra 2 content] courses. We are currently going over the inner workings of Desmos and how to use function notation and restrictions to create their public art pieces. I am using this picture of my Tacoma from Hungry Valley to lead them through writing equations and restricting their domain and range to get the graphs we want.

I thought I would share it here. I work on it during their in class work time over the screen so they can watch it come to life. Anyone can view it at the link below.

Click on and off the circular picture of the truck in the very upper left of the screen to turn on and off the truck's background picture and only view the graphs.

We have only gone over Circles and Ellipses to this point so there isn't much anything good on it so far....

You should rotate it and include the x, y, and z axis and find the area between the sections using triple integrals in cylindrical coordinates. That would be fun.

As a struggling math student, I have to say respectfully don't be a dick lol. I have learned that when someone says "that would be fun" I am lost!!! haha

That would be the AP Calc AB course next door. I teach regular Calc and we start volumes next week. I'm hoping to get to the Riverside Poly volume project before the end of the school year.

Yes you would be lost if your in pre cal. x,y,z and triple integrals don't come untill calc 3.

That would be multivariate. BC topics don't cover that in high school. That's second year college math unless a professor comes to the high school to teach the course, which we discussed at the end of last year but the local community college wouldn't support it

I can teach any high schooler Calculus, it's just ordered the way it is to promote the growth of functions, trigonometry, and algebra first.

here is an update. The students are really getting into their pieces. There was a group of girls who hate math who were going, "Oh my God, another circle! Yes!" while they were working on their own drawings

No, I teach near LA. They have calculus projects posted online that I saw at a Supercross race in 2015
