I meant while taking the picture. I was an armament tech while at a FLARNG Unit when I was young. I thought the shadow looked familiar. Be safe.

Only if you have an air bridge already in place.

The C-17 (Barney) is an F-150 with a 10 gallon tank!

The C-5 (Fred) is an F-350 with extra 40s. She fat, comfy, and gots legs.

    ... ^^^ ... CA ... I liked your above comparison ...

I watched them build C-5's at the Lockheed plant (before Lockheed-Martin merge) in Marietta, GA ... my older "mentoring me friends" were "lifers" there in machine tool design. I was told that Lockheed used to pay $1.00 annual rent and do the base maintenance & construction. Lockheed also shared (past) the "base runway area " with Dobbins AFB (USAF, Navy & MAG 42-USMC Attack Helos) and Air Force One always landed there in the past.

Remembering back when a modified Lockheed C-5 was in a bidding fight against the MDAC C-17 (not yet built in numbers) and the C-17 got the deal because it was justified as a "betweener" C-5 to C-130 and Congressional pressures.

Costs a lot of money to develop and build that C-17 ... while the old C-130 keeps getting modified and goes on and on and on.

Glad we have that C-17 though, makes flights a wee bit faster than a C-130.

C5 are not reliable. In 1995 to launch 2 missions you needed 5 acft, and even then you'd be successful and on time only 50-75% of the time. It hasn't gotten much, if any, better.
Ever notice how the only company that can afford to fly them is the American taxpayer?

Nope, I'm not a pilot...I've just spent the last 22 yrs directly involved in the military airlift game.

When we originally brought them into the inventory at Charleston (1992 - 1993), when the acft was refueled the wing vents made a noise that sounds very much like a moose grunting. To my knowledge, that is the origin of the callsign. I know for a fact the early ones made the noise from hearing them on the flightline at RAF Mildenhall in 1995; and they were flying the Moose call sign. I was told then that was why.

Cool stuff! Definitely one of the more unique call signs I've heard.
