So I had my keys stolen from my 994runner Ltd. and I towed it 160km to the nearest dealer today. They're telling me to reprogram the keys I need to buy a new ECU and reprogram that to the new keys. Are they completely full of shit? I don't see how one ecu is different than the other when it comes to just programming a new key for it.

Loaded my truck up and took it home. $2000 for a new key is retarded. 99 4runner for parts. Runs perfect.

What the fuck!? Its just a normal key right? We arent dealing with a damn Mercedes er some shit! Did they mean the electronic key fob and its little reciever box thingy? Like the deal to unlock the doors? Otherwise a damn locksmith could make you a key from scratch if need be...

Bull shit. Any high end key/locksmith shop will have the programmer to program the new keys. You don't need to go to the dealer.

I had 2 made a year or so ago. $30 per key. I paid it with a smile. Dealer wanted $60/key.

Just reread your post. a 1999 truck did not have an immobilizer key. Its just a regular key. The dealer can cut new ones just from getting the VIN info. Your dealer is a joke. Find a new one.

The newer trucks have a key that communicates with vehicle ECU. Wrong key and truck will turn over but wont start. Its a basic anti theft feature. If your key has a black dot and the letter "G" stamped in it, you have an immobilizer system.

My Tundra has it. It works pretty good except it does not like it if I leave the key in the ignition for extended time. I can weeks without driving it. If I go to start it, it wont start. I have to take the key out for 30 seconds then reinsert. Odd for sure and it took me a long time to figure it out.
