I suggest installing an after market transmission cooler. They have different grades and I would go with the super cooler. I would also suggest when going downhill that you put the transmission in the least resistant gear (no engine braking) and use your brakes. And maybe even installing a brake controller on the trailer for added safety when going down steep grade Hills.

Did you upgrade the stock? Mind describing the process. Did you have to drain fluid before starting? Did you add any transmission Fluid?

I have a scan gauge that shows me the trans temp. I added a quart and then watched my temp get above 115 and unscrewed the 5mm plug. I removed the worthless trans cooler that came on it. I plugged the the hoses up and did not lose 1 drop. This is the most efficient cooler you can buy that will fit in the space you have.

I might have to do this sometime in the future. Did you have to add any hose? Doesn't sound like it.The connector look threaded, do the hoses screw on or just push on?

I think I may have answered my own question by looking at this. http://www.etrailer.com/question-127107.html

When swapping it out, did you have any issues because the air in the lines of the cooler getting into the transmission? Do you bleed it off, or does it do it on it's own?

Unless it was put in aftermarket your trunk came with 3.73s. All 2nd gen V6 Autos are 3.73

No, you don't have to worry about air in the lines. You do have make sure the hose coming from the radiator goes in the bottom, so it fills the cooler, then runs out the top back to the transmission. You have to have this part
    http://www.amazon.com/Derale-98200-...&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00

I took a piece of angle aluminum and cut 4 mounts and used Lord rubber mounts to eliminate vibration. If you tow a heavy load this is the best money you can spend on your truck along with a scan guage so you can monitor your trans temp. The scan guage can give you your pan temp and you torque converter temp. You have enough hose to hook in to the cooler but I bought some and cut it to the correct length. It has reduced my trans temp at least 30 to 40 degrees. I hooked a fan up to it but it made absolutely no difference so I removed it.

Ok. 2nd trip and the results were much better. First off, thanks to everyone for their help! I got my ScanGuage updated to the latest version and I can now see my Trans Temps the whole time. On the highways, I am managing temps under load (5000lbs) around 180-190. In the city with traffic, that can climb to 210-225 depending on traffic lights and overall speed. Regardless, the Tacoma did great, and we are camping!

I purchased this cooler, and just got it in, as I am looking at the cooler I see no identification markings on it to tell me what hose goes where. I did not get any directions with this cooler. So my question is, how did you know which hose went where on the new cooler.

As far as I know, coolers aren't directional. Fluid goes in one side and out the other, and air flows through the fins. The trans will pump the fluid through the cooler

Ok, but one hose is coming from the engines radiator and the other it appears to be coming from the transmission, I guess i'm just confused. AHA...I think I got it, maybe...is the trans fluid coming from the transmission, running through the engines radiator???? then out the radiator to the trans cooler then returning to the transmission??

Yes. That's how you run transmission lines. From the trans, to the radiator, to the cooler, back to the trans.

Gotchya....So really the transmission fluid is being cooled twice, theoretically. Thanks for straightening that out for me, much appreciated.

Theoretically yes. You want the water to cool it at low speeds and stop and go traffic. The air cooler will help at higher speeds with air flow

It makes a big difference which way the hoses are hooked up. You want the hose coming from the radiator to go in the bottom so the trans fluid is forced all the way up through the cooler before it returns to the transmission.

And this is why this is a great forum to be parts of. Informative information that you can't get anywhere else. Thanks for the info, I am going out to my truck now to check how I have the hoses hooked up, I think I have it backwards. Thanks again

So to clarify on this does it matter if the fluid just hits 215 for half a minute or is this interval if the fluid constantly runs at 215?
