Sitting at the dealer right now for 5000 mile service, ask for oil change also and they said no problem.Drive down the road and check for leaks and oil level, obvious they had not touched the engine drain plug or filter.Oil still dirty,so drive back and and advisor talks to tech, says he read the order wrong and no he had not changed it.Service ticket had it as done.So here I sit waisting almost half a day,not sure a free oil change was worth it.

wow! sadly, that sounds about right. As long as they write down that it
was done and the owner never checks behind them.... it's done!

bah ha ha ha. At least you checked. Most people just presume all is well.

Dealerships are filled with people just like everywhere else. Some are conscientious, some are punching a clock. Unless you personally know a tech and the advisor allows you to request them, you're rolling the dice each time you go.

They get to see my vehicle for warranty or recall work. That's it.

If you're not a DIY person, find a quality independent shop.

That was pretty much my experience as well.... when I called the service mgr he told me the 5k service did NOT include a lube/oil change. My reply was "that's what I asked you to do." looong silence....

I didn't ask for an interpretation of the FREE service - which btw is part of the purchase price so NOT free.

Who knows if it was intentional or not, won't come back here though.Always change my own in my Tundra and Camry, the lure of free reeled me in though.Have driven Toyotas since 86 and have wanted a Tacoma forever, what with the low trans fluid and such this has not been the best ownership experience to say the least..

I thought the included oil changes for the first 25K or whatever is done every 10K . The in-between service at 5K intervals is some visual inspections and thats about it. Also floor mat inspection LoL. That's why it wasn't changed. Unless your running regular dino and not synthetic.

Yeah, some dealers will go ahead and do it at 5 if you ask, which I did and they said it was done.Just left after going back a second time, checked it again, oil was changed but they made the biggest mess you've ever seen, oil everywhere on my truck.literally dripping off of it,service manager bout busted a blood vessel yelling at them. I watched them this time as they cleaned it up.What an ordeal.

Geez, that'd be the last time I went back there. And let them know why I'd never be back. I wish I could do my own maint, but getting to old to crawl underneath anymore. If my dealer ever pulled this kind of crap I'd find another place to go tho.

Didn't feel like starting a whole new thread for a quick question, so here goes.

I went in for my first oil change and 10,000 mile service today and noticed on the sheet they gave me it has the oil weight listed as 5W-30 instead of the 0W-20 Toyota calls for. I'm thinking about giving them a call tomorrow to see what they say, but I was wondering if anyone else has had something similar happen or if it's just general practice or something. Also a possibility the line item in the computer is just set to 5W-30, but still...

On a side note I also reviewed my dash cam just to see what went on when I wasn't there and they sure did crank up the radio (OEM Audio Plus system). Not really upset about it too much since it was some good music and they played it the whole time and seemed to enjoy it. One of the dudes actually knew who it was (Andy Mineo) at which I was a bit surprised. At least this time they didn't floor it around the lot like they did the first time. They also noticed my MagnaFlow system and dusted off the logo :rofl:Sounded good in their opinion.

I do plan on changing the oil next at 20,000 miles and I'm really hoping even if the weight is off that it's at least full synthetic and can go that long.

Interesting....be hard to tell. Could be a paperwork error could be the wrong oil. I'd make them change it again to make sure it's right, but that's just me.

I'd be so pissed if they didn't change my oil. I had it done at 5000 and I checked the dip stick and the oil was clean.

I would go off inside the dealer

Is there such a thing as "break in oil"? - I have a 2014 with just 500 miles..(will use the truck more starting next year...)This was my second trip to the dealer for a yearly inspection. For the past 2 years I kept getting Jan's reminder of my overdue free oil change. I told the service writer that I'll pass on the oil change this time, then later on a Tech came over & said although the truck has 500 miles, the oil should be changed after 2 years, so I finally broke down & said OK change it....(The dealer just wants to get reimbursed from Toyota) I was leery as I know someone who works at that dealer & he said that they don't use Toyota oil, just some crap in a 55 gallon drum....but at the parts counter they tout their quarts of Toyota oil.... But back to my original question.....Is there such thing as Break in Oil any more?

you guys complaining about dealer oil changes makes me glad I did it myself this weekend. 5k on odo, oem filter and Mobil 1 0W20. Cost me about $35 and zero headaches.

Not really a break in oil change anymore. However, age does also play a part. Even with 500 miles, if its been two years you need it changed.

Oil change intervals are at 10k. Already dealt with this. Called Toyota and all.

To be honest I'm stumped on this...Showing my age here but, back in the day & even in racing days, new/rebuilt engines started out with non detergent oil so the rings could seat on the cylinder walls as with the bearings... usually for about 1500-2000 miles then changed....Today's technology oil has the consistency of water, so my thought process is taking a time to catch up...I have always done my service, from oil/transmission changes, to brakes...that's about all these days. From now on I will use the Toyota oil (from their parts dept. retaining the receipts) & filters....I will also opt. for their costly extended warrantee. You have to be one step ahead of them because the first thing they do is run to the computer & check the service history. By doing your own maintenance they will quickly say you have not been in for service, so the receipts & documentation will support your position...

Oil changes before the recommended service interval (10k miles) per the owners manual are a waste of time, money and resources. Save the whales and your pennies. The engineers who designed and tested this motor and came up with recommended maintenance intervals are smarter than you.
