    Hey all,

I came home today and smelled a strong smell of gas around my truck, which is parked outside. It was about 86* F today and I had a full (or almost full) tank. There is a puddle of gas in front of the rear wheel on the driver's side, which I believe is where the tank is at. Am I just looking at overflow from the gas expanding on a hot day, or is that not a thing with this truck?

    Freaking out just slightly. Thanks!

That's definitely not normal....86*F is not even hot, we deal with much hotter temps for months on end down here in SoCal and I've never heard of this happening, let alone on a brand new vehicle. Leaking combustible liquid in your driveway isn't something that should be considered normal...I'd take it in, it'll be covered under warranty

Be very careful driving it until you figure out where the leak is from and resolve it. Gas leak on exhaust may end very badly if you try to drive.

Any of the leaf springs out of place? They could potentially puncture the gas tank.

Could have run over something that punctured your gas tank.

Well, that's not what I was hoping to hear. I didn't see any leaf spring damage or any other damage to the thank, in fact the leaking appears to be coming from the upper part of the tank as I didn't see any wetness/leaking on the very bottom. It seems to be coming down the side, the side you see when you squat down to look underneath from the driver's side. I'll give the dealer a call tomorrow.

I should mention that the tank still appears "past full" on the instrument cluster when I turned car on, so obviously not enough leaked out to even get it to the "full" mark.

I know gas expands and leaks out in motorcycles (have had that happen several times before) which is why I asked. Gas does expand, so unless there is a vent line in the tank, that would create some super dangerous pressure, no? You guys sure this can't be by design?

Did you just fill the tank, for sure?

The liquid will expand more than the volume of the tank can expand. It's supposed to be caught in the charcoal cannister. Maybe you have something wrong with your charcoal cannister

Mystery solved. I crawled under the truck and looked closer. The bed drain hole at the front of the bed on the driver's side was wet. So then I remember that I carry a 2 gallon Rotopax in the bed of the truck, secured to the rail with a Rotopax mount. I looked in the bed and sure enough smelled gas vapor. Turns out the Rotopax expanded, punctured itself on the retaining handle edge and leaked over a gallon of gas in the bed of the truck.

I thought these Rotopax were tough, I'll call them tomorrow.

    So, yeah, oops.

LOL, it's probably because I'm low on AT fluid ;-)

This might be the first of hundreds of third gen problem threads that weren't actually problems with the truck!
