I think I'm ready to go order my 16 taco this week (dclb trd off road in bbp).

I've used the extang trifold on my current and previous tacos. The factory one seems decent except for cutting into the bed rails...

I remember seeing comments here and there about a rumored update that doesn't require the bed rail hacking...

Has this actually happened? Or should I still stear clear?

My cover has the cut outs. I seen threads where you can replace the bed covers after removing the top. BTW, I love the bed cover. It make the back secure and they can't steel your tailgate.

Have you looked up close at one that has the factory one?

I've seen some people talk about "hacked up" bed rails as if they make a giant mess of it when it's installed. That's not the reality though, at least not in my case. Mine has it and the cuts are straight and clean and I think it looks just fine.

I'll say it again, i really don't see the big deal about having the caps trimmed to accommodate the factory tonneau cover. 99% of the time the damn thing is closed and you don't see it anyway. And even if you put a topper on the truck you still won't see them from the outside. I've actually had a topper on my '16 that previously had the factory tonneau and in no way did the cut bed rails cause any issues, leaks, etc. I even left to locking pins in place for the factory tonneau when I had the topper on and again, no issues, never got in the way of anything etc. I ended up selling the topper and putting the factory tonneau cover back on. I loved something for a friend and had the tonneau cover open and goes what? I didn't even notice the cut rails and check this out...neither did anyone else.

I think that this, just like so many of the other basically insignificant gripes that people have (not talking about engine or transmission issues) get so blown out of proportion on here. One guy says he doesn't like something and then the rest of the people whining and complaining don't even own the truck but just adopt it as a gripe before actually checking out the truck themselves and actually seeing what all the fuss is about.

Many aftermarket covers use the bedrails for installation which makes them less usable if you need to tie stuff down. They're also more of a pain to take off and put back on, which brings me to another point about the factory tonneau, and this one really had me confused. Some have complained about the factory tonneau cover being a pain to remove. Here's the deal...it's one small bolt you remove and the entire cover lifts off. It really takes less than a minute to take it off and put it back on. No messing with clamps, etc. It is a bit heavy, but that's one thing I'm ok with. But people complaining that it's a hassle to remove are just plain lazy.

Mine also has never leaked more than a couple drops, literally. And this is after days and days of very heavy rain and taking the truck to a self-service car wash. No issues at all. Wish I could say that about the transmission. If I was interested in a '16 Tacoma I'd spend less time worrying about the factory tonneau and think twice about the erratic transmission and slug of an engine it has.
