Just a general mechanical question. A friend of mine bought a cheap 4x4 with a supposedly seized engine. The guy he bought it from said he heard some grinding and it just stopped.

My question is what would cause something like this? Im guessing something went out like the oil pump but nothing was said about overheating...All I got to look at was the oil dipstick and it looked/smelled normal. Im just wondering if it was seized at all? we tried to start it but it acted like a dead battery no clicks nothing...

Could be lots of things. Blown head gasket can hydraulically lock the engine so it won't budge. Had a 1989 Astro van do this to me...

wouldnt coolant leak into the oil pan though? The oil looked normal not burned or milky. I didnt get to mess with it much when I got to look at it the other day. My thoughts was that the alternator drained the battery down to the point where it wouldnt start...I might get to mess with it some more later. The gauges seemed to work but no clicks from the starter when you try to start. I'll post some more as I find out more.

My astro showed NO signs. Just would not turn over. I removed spark plugs and two cylinders erupted when the starter was spun. I suppose eventually water would have made its way into the oil.

Yeah makes sense I guess I just figured it wouldnt just suddenly stop without some kind of minor problem leading up to the major problem

I got to pull the codes and apparently there wasnt any...I was reading up a little bit and theres a blinking red led and it either got an alarm fault or the battery is toast. I have a spare battery Im going to swap in to see what happens. Some of the dodge forums say their vehicles just quit running and they are stuck. Because the alarm system disconnects the fuel injectors and starter...which the first time I got to look at it, it seemed to not even try to start. so it will be a good cheap fix if its just the battery. or even the alternator battery combo. I'll know more today.
