General Grabber HTS for winter/road tire

Wondering if anyone has any experience with the General Grabber HTS tires on a Tacoma and how they held up in the winter?

They have great reviews (http://www.fourwheeler.com/roadtests/129_0806_general_grabber_hts_tire_test/index.html) and are rated #1 All-Season on TireRack (TireRack). Tried doing some searching around here and found a few people who were considering them but couldn't really find anyone who owned them.

90% of my driving is on snowy roads in the winter (usually slush or hard packed ice/snow.) My motorcycle is my main vehicle in the summer so I only put maybe 1k-2k miles on in the summer. Had the truck for a year now and only have 5.3k miles on it or so.

Just looking for a tire that I can replace the stock Dunlop Grandtreks with and not take a hit in MPG with a heavier AT tire. I don't really off-road so getting an AT tire would be overkill for my needs. The stock Dunlops have gotten me through everything the winter has thrown at me but they definitely aren't the best suited for it. Not sure if I can even wait until 20k miles before I replace these. Don't like them very much.

 

Almost bought those myself as a replacement, For year round H/T, they rate pretty well for winter, its gotta be a step up from stock. I;d say go for it.

I went w/ the CR #3 rated H/T, Kumho APT KPL 51's for about $105 a pop (17's no less). They aren't as well rated in snow, but on par otherwise. Winter rating didnt matter much since I have seperate winter tires.

 

I have the AT2 and love them.

Generals are overall good tires.

 

If I was to go with an AT tire I would definitely go with the AT2's. They are just more than I need really.

On a side note, figures it would be all Upstate NY'ers in a winter related thread.

I like the AT2 cause they can be studded if I want to.

 

Anything is better than the Dunslops. The Hankooks get great reviews so I'd go for it. Tirerack reviews lead me the right way on my Destinations.

 

I have Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo 2's ,they also have a good review on Tire Rack. The tires are excellent,check'em out.

Those look nice but not very beefy.

 

The Grabbers are a LOT beefier than the picture does them Justice.

 

I replaced my dunlops 245/70 at 1k miles with the General Grabber HTS 265/70. Have not lost any mpg with them and just ran through some covered highways in this "eastern" snowstorm we just had. They are not AT tires but performed well. Still needed 4x4 on a few starts but once they grab they hold well..

My goal was quiet, mpg and wet performance on highway and they do just that. They are not AT tires so you may need 4x4 more in the snow but they are far superior then stock dunlops. I would rate them a 7-8 in snow overall but 9-10 in everything else. Price was also great for what you get.

 

If your not really going any bigger, and you want to save money ride out what you have..your not going to improve your ride that much for how much your paying to switch tires while they still have LOTS of life left. Tires don't wear out too fast in the winter its in the summer (warmer weather for us Yankees) that they wear faster. I'd bet you'll get 40k+ easily out of them.

 

Definitely not going for the "beefy" look. Looks aren't a factor for me.

Sounds like everyone pretty much agrees with what the reviews say so I will be giving them a shot as my next tire. Let's see how long I can hold out before I get sick of these Dunlop's and am ready to switch .
