My beloved 2001 DC, with after-market steel bumpers, sliders, dual batteries, topper, roof-top-tent, super charger and winch, is HEAVY. And that's without wife, kids and camping gear. The brakes are no longer confidence inspiring, and while I don't think anything is technically wrong with them (fluid is fine, pads are fine) I'd love to upgrade them.

Are there any better-that-stock 1st Gen Tacoma brake options? When I try to do a panic stop, I come nowhere close to locking up the tires.

    Thanks

Tundra brakes! I knew there had to be an answer. And after a little research, it's probably a combination of my 33s and the extra weight. I neglected to figure in that a larger diameter wheel contributes, too.

If anyone else has done this (put Tundra brakes on a Tacoma) and has feedback about how much of a difference it makes, I'd love to hear about it.

Night and day difference. I was experiencing the same thing and it got so bad that I was hoping not to get in an emergency situation. Put on the Tundra Brakes before traveling to pick up my little camper and kicked myself for not doing it sooner. That much of a difference.

Yeah from what I've heard it's definitely worth it to make the switch. It's on my to do list for this summer for sure.

I have not done this swap, since I haven't added extra weight or larger tires, but I recommend it for you.
Most that do it, say it makes a big difference.

Tundra brake upgrade!! It makes a huge difference. After doing it I wonder why it wasn't the first thing I did to my truck.

I did it as well. Luckily we have so many Toyotas we harvested the brakes off my dads first gen tundra and put them on mine. Then he got 2nd gen tundra brakes for his lol. I love the upgrade. Now I have two 1998 Tacomas, one with the upgrade and one without, and I felt like I was going to die driving the stock one lol

you might also be able to swap your front setup with a 2nd gen prerunner's front brakes.

but 1 thing i was wondering about. do you have to change the backing plate as well? if im not mistaken, the rotors are wider in diameter, and the stock rotors barely fit in the backing plate.
