Hello TacomaWorld! I am a bit new to being an "official member" of TW but have used this forum and its incredibly knowledgeable members for all of my Tacoma inquiries and even allowed a novice like myself to install my own lift. This happens to be my first post, I feel I have done my due diligence, but haven't been able to find a concrete answer to my question.

Roughly 2 years ago I purchased my 01 Tacoma with 20k miles, 37k today. This thing is my pride and joy. My question revolves around maintenance, obviously most maintenance solutions are based around miles, but I know time plays a factor as well.

I am a big fan of preventative/optimal maintenance and doing the work myself. So I might be looking for an excuse to get under the hood, but I was curious if time played a roll in the life span of spark plugs and spark plug wires and if you guys think its a good idea to go ahead replace them (I've noticed a couple minor things). Or if there's anything else time will play a key roll in even with low miles. Like I said, I'm a fan of preventative maintenance.. but not a fan of lighting money on fire for no reason :)

    TL;DR

Low miles, 15 year old Tacoma, should I replace plugs and wires.

Welcome! Do you have a v6 or 4 cyl? I'm not sure about the 4cyl, but the 3.4l v6 has copper plugs which should be replaced every 30k miles, according to the manual.

It's a fairly simple DIY project that will save you money if you do it yourself.

Oh and holy cow, I just realized your truck is an 01 with only 37k miles?? That's awesome! I still have you beat though...I picked up an '04 last month with only 24k miles on it ;)

Post some pictures of this bad girl!

at only 37k you should be okay, but if you have the $ and time why not. At least then you will have a spare set of wires. comes in handier then you may think.

Things pretty much new but meh. Plugs and wires are cheap and easy to replace so go ahead.

Certainly not the plugs. They will be good for many more miles. I changed my originals at 80K and they had no wear on them.

However, the wires might be worth doing. It is the insulation on the wires that can get weathered and start leaking. Inspect them for cracks.

time really only affects rubber. as in belts, hoses, and wires. know the old 3k miles or 3 months deal for oil changes? 3k miles is whats important. and its easier to remember 3 months to some people than 3k miles. so you don't really have to do it every 3 months if you don't go 3k miles.

i haven't changed the oil in my truck for nearly a year cause ive only driven it about 3k miles. running synthetic and it still looks half clean.
