My gut feeling is that the answer is yes but just wanted to check. I think my PCV is sending some oil back into the engine, which causes a major oil loss (3.5 out of 5 qt every 1500 mi). I would like to install a catch can to confirm that and was wondering if ANY catch can will work for a 2nd gen Tacoma, V6. E.g., this one.

Are you saying you lose 3.5 qts every 1500 miles? Only things to look at with the catch cans is if vent to atmosphere or not, mounting options and hose sizes.

that seems like a lot ... I'd be more worried about the root cause

of course. i completely rebuild the engine myself last September, lapped the valves and replaced the head gasket -- i may have a cylinder leaking and will do a leakdown test

but i'm trying to see if it's the PCV sending oil back into the combustion chambers before blaming the head gaskets or valves for letting oil in

replace the pcv valve, its cheap quick and easy.

That stated, my truck does not use a drop of oil in 5k miles and i dont run a catch can.... so you have other issues at hand and a catch can will not solve or help you out much.

@foampile I remember reading your last few threads, I'm expecting gold again...

Also you have way bigger problems than PCV if you're losing 3.5quarts.

I also have no smoke coming from around the engine bay or tail pipe, which makes me hopeful it's not burning oil

Smoke from the tailpipe, especially at startup in the morning? If so, could be valve guide seals.

Posted before I saw your last post. If no smoke with that much oil loss, it ain't burnin' oil.

Since you changed your head gaskets in the last episode, have you checked your coolant for oil?

Yes, both oil and coolant are really clean. No signs of mixing

So, no smoke, no oil/coolant mixing. That means one thing left, you got a leak.

I do get some normal looking exhaust out of the tail pipe when I first start the engine. But it does stop when I start driving.

I did replace all the valve stem seals.

That's an awful lot of oil being burned.

If your getting smoke in the engine compartment, you most likely have a oil leak. If you're seeing smoke come out of the exhaust then I'd say valve guide seals were damaged during R&R of valves.

    _______________________________

Fill engine oil level to exactly the full point. Drive vehicle and check every 500 miles and confirm rate of oil consumption.

If your not seeing oil leakage, you're burning it, even if it's not visible.

I did replace the oil pan gasket. No other signs of leakage around the engine, very clean

Also, in regard to your original question, all catch cans are basically universal and operate using the same principle.

    But.

A catch can should never be needed on a stock engine. Even mildly built usually don't require one. If you were to run one you'd be basically band-aiding whatever the underlying cause is and are on borrowed time.

Pull your spark plugs and check for contamination. If it isn't burning, and isn't going in the coolant, it is going somewhere. Or you forgot to put oil in.
