Bucking truck in the morning

    hi TW,

My new Tacoma TRD sport is now 3 weeks old and about has about 800 miles. Since the first day I got the truck, each morning when I start the truck and take it work or class, it starts bucking for the first half or 1 mile. Some days it dies down quick, other days it takes about 5 to 8 minutes. It's like the truck is coughing. It's similar to when you run out of gas in your car, you know how the car's engine goes into these spurts of drive and cut out. It's like it's sputtering. I don't know what this problem is called.

Is this because the truck's engine is very cold in the morning and when it warms up it stops doing so? That's the only explanation I have. What will I do about this? Its not there every day, thats the frustrating part. I live in sunny San Diego, and at nights, it gets about 56 to 64F degrees. Has anyone else here experienced this problem?

My truck was purchased in April, and was fresh off the factory, it's manufacture date is March 2016. Since I have a dashcam on my truck, I have a few videos of this, but how well the audio and jerks is recorded on the dash cam is up for question.

I went to my toyota dealership last week and have setup an appointment to bring my truck in on Wednesday early morning (I hope they give me some rental so that I could go to work).

That is most definitely not normal, something is wrong and with a brand new truck you shouldn't have to figure it out on your own. You are under warranty, have you made an appointment to take it in? The dealer should fix whatever the issue is at 100% zero cost to you. Let us know what they say

    Welcome to TW!

Hopefully it is something simple like a sensor. With Toyota's great warranty they should have you fixed up in no time.

Yeah, definitely something wrong. Have the dealer keep it overnight. Since it seems pretty easy replicate, they shouldn't have too much trouble getting to the bottom of it.

2016s are having low trans fluid issues from the factory. Toyota does not check the fluid when they sell you the truck. You can find a thread on here in how to check it yourself.

Out of curiosity, did this "bucking" start after your last tank of gas?

maybe try unhooking the battery for a while. reconnect after 20 min and then drive it harder. supposedly the engine/transmission learn a little bit.

Mine used to do something similar, it is far less frequent now with 4700 miles. I just suffered through it, didn't bother to unhook the battery. I would tend to step on it harder to get around this. I took it in to a dealer and was told it was normal for Tacomas, so be prepared for that. :duel:

Use top tier gas. Sounds like you may have a tank of bad gas.

Does the motor seem or sound like it's running right? If not it's probably mis firing. Could be a plug or coil. Been a few issues already with the cps sensors. Could be that as well. If the motor seems to be running fine and smooth I would say perhaps the torque converter

@aggie77 : No, the bucking was there right from the second day morning after I bought the truck. THe problem is that it is not present every day. But I have plenty dashcam footage of the issue.

@Lawfarin : I checked the plugs and the coils. They are fine. It's only a few weeks old. I have a service appointment to drop it off tomorrow.
