Just realized the paint is starting to peel on the hood of my '04 xtracab. I'm a bit blown away as I take great care of the truck and the rest of the paint is immaculate. Anyone else seen this? The body shop guys tell me it's from the heat of the engine but also said they've never seen it on a tacoma before... any help is appreciated. Cheers!

Is it the paint or is it the clear coat?

Same happened to mine. Looks like a cheap spray over was done. Lasted about 3 years. Now the hood and roof is terrible. And I can't afford to get it redone for quite a while. So hopefully it will last long enough to not rust before I get to it.

It is the paint. Straight down to the metal.

Mine was beginning to do this on the roof, and I was very good about waxing it at least once a year. It wasn't peeling off down to the metal, but the clear coat was starting to fog and crack - the first signs of clear coat failure. That's the only reason I fully plastidipped my truck. Waaaaay cheaper than a new paint job.

You could always redo clear coat by panel, but once it's the paint then it's a bitch.

I may actually do this! I've tried plasti dip before and hated it. But I suppose I could try it again just for a temp fix. Didn't even think of doing just the hood and the roof.

Edit: so if I were to look for tips and tricks, to make sure I do it professionally this time, should I look at the plasti dip mega thread I've seen floating around?

Just regular tips as far as prep goes. Do you have to scuff it at all? Or just clean it real good (what's best btw) and spray away? Not planning on clear coating.

Wipe down with some rubbing alcohol first. That's only prep you really have to do. Then spray away!

Ride on. I think I'll be doing this real soon now. Ha. Will be so glad to not have to look at my crappy hood every day now. Even though it's just gonna be hidden.

How many coats, and cans for that matter, would you say I'd need for the roof and the hood?

technically, using dishwashing soap could be too harsh on automotive paint and cause this damage. perhaps that was the culprit.

and it is NOT recommended to use rubbing alcohol to clean surfaces before painting. Use something like Klean Strip Prep All.

Really? Never heard of that. I've washed other vehicles that way before. But not the tacoma. Always use the good auto soap. But in my case, it was just a crappy spray over and didnt last. You can totally tell because nothing was taken off and it's peeling around the edges of all the exterior trim and handles and whatnot. Nothing was removed. Just taped and sprayed over looks like. And barely scuffed. Can see a few scuff marks through the paint in a couple spots. At least my brother could, I couldn't. But he has painted a few vehicles himself professionally and knows what to look for. He noticed that when he came with me to buy it, as he was my mechanics eyes to give the truck a good looksee before I purchased. So we kinda knew what to expect. Just a bummer. Was lucky to get the truck so it wasn't a determining factor when I bought it.. That's my story anyways I guess, lol. But yeah, one day I'll get around to repainting. Brother said he'd help me, but that it would have to be done the proper way or not At all. Ha. And now that I've experienced what happens with a crap job, I agree.

You'll need to use enough coats to make it thick enough to peel off easy enough later. I would say at least 5-10 coats depending on how thick you apply it. I used gallons and a paint sprayer so can't tell you many cans to use. When I had my wheels dipped white, I used about one can per wheel.
