The last two times I've drove my taco I've smelled oil burning, but only for a few seconds then nothing. Has anyone else had this problem? I didn't see anything when I got under it real quick? I really would rather not go to a dealer because it's a pain in the ass getting there and back.

Mine smelled like crap for the first 1000 miles. I assumed it was stuff burning off the exhaust. No smell now. Is yours new?

Yes after I lubed my own truck at 5K it smelled for a few runs ... I wiped up extra grease that made it back out of the caps tho... most mechs just pump grease and move on. The grease flings out onto to exhaust pipe from the back 2 zirk fittings.

Just thought I would give an update....

The other day while driving my truck I noticed the oil smell came more often. I first noticed the smell at 2500 miles, but quite rarely. Now I'm at 3200 and notice it every time I drive. Called the toyota dealer and brought it in. I figured it would be a loose oil filter or something simple. Dropped my truck off at 11, and they said it would probably be two hours at most. They would call me when its done. At 2 they called saying they're still working on it, as they are short staffed. By 3 they called saying they are getting me a rental car because their is a major oil leak and they don't know where it's coming from. Their shop foreman is now in the process of tearing the engine down. They said they hadn't seen this before and wanted to take extra care. Hopefully that is a true statement. Will keep everyone updated on the prognosis!

As a side note I asked if they checked the transmission fluid to see if it was low. They said it was good.

Relax, more than likely it's something with a seal. Would be different if people came in with cracked blocks or the motors were sludging. Ok 2 users here have oil leaks. Probably 40-50k of these trucks already produced that's not a bad number at all

The Tacoma has been on sale for what, 8 months? Everytime I see a monthly units sold number, it's at least 13,000. They've probably sold over 100,000 units. Not sure how many have been built.

I only shelled out a tad over 25K for my street princess. No problems here.

I low balled because I wasn't sure. I thought they only sold about 75k Tacoma a year in previous years with the exception of a few years. I assumed they would be over 100k for the year but no idea what they are at now. Didn't want someone calling me out if I over shot. I was trying to find sales numbers but couldn't. Sorry and thanks

I'm not disagreeing with you. However I'm say that pretty much every incident so far is basically isolated. Sure there are several people with the a few of them. I still think it's ridiculous from the plant they can't get the correct fluid levels in the truck. To me this should be caught by quality control. All I'm really trying to say is this pretty much happens with every manufacture. Bottom line the faster you get the vehicles off the line, and into the dealerships the faster and more money your going to make. When you wait 10 years to do a full "generation change" (even though a lot of components are a carry over on the 3rd gen) people are excited to get the new generation. Some have waited years for this. And now with the added competition that's just another reason to get them pumping out faster. If these trucks were made in Japan I'd bet my last dollar there would be less issues coming off the assembly line

I just hope Toyota doesn't shoot themselves in the foot chasing an extra dollar at the cost of their previously renowned quality and reliability. I've bought Toyota trucks for 20 years and at the top of the list of reasons why is that they used to be bullet proof reliable. My Tundra is 12 years old and I wanted to buy a new tacoma. But after reading all of the issues on here it's just to much of a risk at this time. I could get lucky and not have any issues, but I could also be the guy who needs, engine, transmission, ecu and u joint replacement. I used to buy Toyota so that I didn't have to be the latter of the two. I hope times aren't changing.

Update: Toyota had my truck for almost 2 weeks.

At first they thought it was my valve cover gasket leaking which was not the case.
They had to replace the CAM HOUSING with a new one as well as all Orings pertaining to the process. They had an engineer fly down from Oregon to help the mechanic figure out the problem.
