Week old Tacoma Sunroof Exploded..

800km into my truck and my sunroof explodes, Toyota of Canada covered it!

 

Exploded??? What do you mean, like it spontaneously shattered in every direction? Was fire involved? Did a giant trash panda fall out of a tree and onto your sunroof?

So many questions!

Was driving down highest at 100km/he, nobody in front of me. Hit a dip in the road and heard a loud noise almost like a shot gun blast..

Few km down the road I got to town and opened my visor and the whole sunroof was shattered, I closed the visor and the next bump I hit I heard the glass come down onto the visor.

Drove it to the dealer and after a bit of reasoning they sent it in for warranty approval, a few hours later I got a call saying they authorized the replacement.

 

I've heard this has become a problem now with newer sunroofs. In a effort to reduce weight, thinner glass is now being used and if the cover is closed on the sunroof on very hot days, heat can build up between the glass and cover causing the glass to shatter.

A rare circumstance to be sure and not just applicable to Toyota.

 

Yeah, I've heard of these spontaneously exploding 3rd gen sunroofs... there has been a rash of motors falling out too

 

I didn't think to take a pic when I got it to dealer was pretty rattled.

 

Maybe not 3rd Gen tacomas but there are reports of various cars having it happen if you Google it.

 

Yep, Google "exploding sunroof"...

All kinds of different cars are affected. One if the reasons I didn't want the tech package was because of that possibility.

 

I was just stirring the pot, if he says his "exploded" I guess I believe him. The motor stuff I made up but check your tranny bolts cuz sometimes the nuts fall off

 

Sounds like opportunity for group buy on duct tape.

But seriously more likely some rock landed and broke it.

 

Really doesn't matter if you believe me or not, Toyota did so obviously it's happened before and they're aware of it.

 

Jesus dude.... I'm just here for comedy relief, yes... I checked google and it appears this has been happening for some time.

I still say watch those tranny's, their nuts do fall off from time to time

 

My wife's 2015 Passat did the same thing, but our insurance had to cover it. It was raining out when hers shattered for no explainable reason.

 

There is a lot of tension on a roof of a car. When you remove 50% of it and replace it with glass, shit happens.

Toyota isn't a stranger to this issue, Scion tCs when released with the panoramic roof windows had issues for the same reason.
