This last season I was travelling during superbowl, so I streamed the game through my iphone into my laptop and had my laptop plugged in to it. Without it I would have had to just watch the highlights:)

Not necesarrily. You have to factor in amp draw as well; for instance: a heat gun is rated at probably .10's of a hp..but the amp draw is well over the 3-4 amps the inverter in your truck can handle.

*You stated that for "only devices rated in HP"..and I'm taking that to mean electric motors, etc, and not a conversion of the entire device's amperage draw to HP.

Good point, Joe -- I should have added that a high-impeadance load will be able to make full use of the 400 W (.54 hp) capacity by minimizing current draw. Any device that will draw more current than the inverter can deliver will fail.
Another note: apparently a full-size refrigerator will not draw too much since I just kept ours running during a four-day power outage in Falls Church, VA. (Used a lot of gas, though -- probably should buy a portable generator!)

I feel like this is a dumb question, but why 400w while idling and 100w in motion? Seems counterintuitive to me

Great for the drive in. We bring our portable radio and sit it on the tailgate facing us in the back of the truck. Everyone around us is green with envy but enjoy the loud volume for the show.

i was so excited to use my power outlet while doing some metal repair to a saw mill on my dad's ranch. i listened to my old man bash my tacoma because it wasnt a full size diesel truck. not a "real" truck he says... wont haul a 20,000 lbs tractor and trailor combo he says... wont get 24 mpg like his dodge he says...wont make it to 290,000 miles with absouletly ZERO repair work to the motor he says.... so i busted out the grinder to clean up some welds, and the effen power outlet wouldent spin up it up!!!! :frusty:

wont power a grinder he says... :goingcrazy:

Curious if anyone has run a stereo off of the outlet? I like to play tunes while out camping on the beach and leaving all the doors open its annoying so i was thinking about bringing a stereo, this is the exact system I have http://www.amazon.com/Sony-MHC-GX450-3-Disc-Discontinued-Manufacturer/dp/B0001LCZZQ. It says its exactly 400w, if the truck stays running do you think its ok to leave this on for possibly hours at a time maxed out like that?
