I'm running the relentless tall bed bars (8" above bedsides) and they're sitting on kbvoodoo metal bedside caps (roughly 0.5" shorter than the stock plastic ones IIRC). I'm able to open my tool chest about 80-85% of the way but not completely. Its definitely open enough to access whatevers inside.

For reference, I have one of these so the top of it sits just at the top of the bedsides.
If you get any shorter than 8", you may have more issues accessing the toolbox. Otherguys move their bedbars + tent towards the tailgate more which gives them a little more room to open their boxes but it really depends on your toolbox and if you have a short bed or long bed.

I added some 1" foam inside the existing mattress pad cover and also have an old 'unzipped' sleeping bag on top of the mattress. Sort of like a pillow top. As a side sleeper myself, this is quite comfy.

yeah I'm 6'3" 205-210... so I feel your pain when sleeping on my side. even with the two egg crates, it's not great so I end up on my back or stomach, but it's an improvement to be sure. but the Memory foam is in my future for sure

We bought this off Amazon - also linked below in "Products Discussed in this Thread." It made a world of difference. We actually prefer our tent mattress over our bed now. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MEEYH68

That's a good idea. I got two backpacking 3.5" self inflating air mattresses from REI (though anyone backpacking with them would be nuts they are big and heavy) and put them under the mattress. They provide the firm support and the foam provides the softness. Keeps me from getting a dead hip (side sleeper) in the middle of the night and actually makes it as comfortable as a bed. Still room to fold tent up with sleeping bags or bedding.

Just a bunch of old crap
I put a 2" queen foam mattress topper in mine (Tepui Kukenam). It's like heaven. Folds up with the tent with no issues, too. No more hot spots from side or belly sleeping.

Did the same thing with some self inflating Thermarest pads we already had (mines 1.5in thick and the wife's around an inch). It was exactly what I needed to be able to sleep completely comfortably through the night even on my side. I'm 6'2" 225lbs and before the thermarest pads it felt like I was sleeping on the aluminum tent base about 3 hours into the night. The wife loves the added padding as well. Needless to say, this is now how we set the tent up when we go out. Also seemed like there was much less condensation under the mattress running this set up even in the 20s. Only place I saw any condensation was in the middle where our thermarests did not cover which also happens to be where our pup sleeps. Ideally, I would like to get a couple pads that span the full width of the tent but until then this will do just fine.

I noticed the same thing, way less condensation. I may look at adding an additional 1-2" foam topper as well. GF has really bad neck & shoulder issues from car accident and hey I don't mind the extra comfort.

These are the pads I am using. A bit spendy for buying two but trust me the comfort and almost zero condensation is worth it. I have a Mt Shasta and they perfectly fit the whole width.

Looking to mount a RTT on my 01 DC over the cab. What are my options for a roof rack that is strong enough to hold the tent with two people inside?? Most of the racks I have seen are only rated for under 200 lbs...

Wouldn't recommend it on a first Gen. Our roofs are kinda weak. I don't think I've seen one tbh, most go on the camper top or bed rack

Prinsu makes racks for the 1st gen DC I believe. @zscott is the owner and is a member here. You can check them out; I'm running one and I know a lot of guys have mounted their tents to his racks. I'm not sure if Frontrunner makes a rack for the 1st gen or not, but I think Zach's racks look better.
