So I had my combo meter replaced due to trip meters randomly resetting...

I insisted that the meter comes preloaded from Toyota with the correct odometer reading. Dealer chose to disagree.

Two weeks after part arrives I finally have it replaced. My odometer is now about 400mi in the past. I show this to the dealer, and they say not to worry about it.

A couple of hours later I get a call from the manager of the service department stating they have to roll the odometer forward due to legalities. I ask their plan - they're not sure yet, but plan to use the mileage readings noted on my various service appointments.

I say obtain reading from previous combo meter and add delta added to this meter then order another while my truck sits. They say my previous meter is long gone.

Questions to those smarter than me in regards to autos:

    - Minus the legal question- any issue for the vehicle with the move 400mi into the past?

    - Would you trust the paperwork as the source of truth for my mileage?

    - What should I get out of the dealer for this mess?

    Thx.

Dealer should have known the new meter needs the same odometer reading and Toyota would have asked them what number to put on the new one prior to shipping it to your dealer.

Other than that, what difference does it make to you? It's only 400 miles.

As long as there are no issues as far as the truck is concerned I don't have any issue with leaving it as is.

Now if they want to "correct" it I do have issue with how they get their numbers, and I do take issue with being without my vehicle for days.

If you they insist they insist on you dropping your truck off again due to there mistake they should compensate you somehow without you having to ask for it. Not much you can do if they don't feel the same other than tell me when you won't buy another vehicle from them.

Time for a new dealer to fix this. Your first dealer will likely pull a Cameron...

That odometer work is now recorded in the Toyota owners website. It will show miles corrected, or something similar. Anyone who is at all savvy about this site will check the site and enter the VIN And see this repair.

Is a future purchaser going to believe that the mile are only "off" 400 miles?

If you don't know, a person only needs the vin, they don't have to own the Toyota to get all the dealer maintenance records on that vehicle.

I would look closer at this issue.

@2010 and @koditten - these are my issues. A.) Are there potential issues lurking with my vehicle now and B.) will this limit my ability to move the vehicle?

Open to any recommendations at this point. Right now the dealer wants me to leave my car for a week while they remove the combo meter and ship it back to Toyota for programming. They're going to use the numbers recorded at various service appointments to determine the "actual" mileage. Truthfully I'm not comfortable with this.

Heck, when I initially brought the discrepancy up the dealer said "Don't worry about what is on the paperwork - we record those wrong all the time".

I don't think there will be any long term issues. Let Toyota send the CM back and insist they supply you with a loaner vehicle.

As for deminished value because of the above issues, i can't answer you. I do know no one is "stuck" with a Tacoma. They sell very fast...even wrecked. That's how i buy mine. I fix and drive them.

if you plan on owning this truck for 200000 miles, then i wouldn't worry a bit.. The difference in sale price at that time won't be an issue.
