I know this is a 3rd Gen forum and what I am telling is a rumor running around Toyota. Admins if this needs to be moved I understand. If there is an existing thread apologies.

As many of you know the 3.5 V6 engine is the same as in the Lexus variant. As per the Toyota Tech (shop forman) he said the Lexus 3.5 will be receiving a turbo or 2 soon. The Tacoma will shortly follow the same plans. No mention of horsepower or any performance figures.
ETA within 2 years is what he has heard.

This may be the only way I'd buy a new Toyota Tacoma.

Sorry guys and gals no more info at this time. Feel free to add the rumors you hear on the topic.

This will not happen on the third gen. You will be lucky to get the 2.0l turbo during the mid cycle refresh in 2019 or so, but more likely is the 8 speed auto from the highlander joins the 3.5 and thats it.

Not likely the forman said the 3.5 was set up for a turbo as are the internals. This is also why there are no headers. The head has a collector cast into it.

He states last he heard was around 2 to 3 years. So possibly during the refresh or just before it.

Correct. The new Ecoboost will receive port and direct injection to correct the soot accumulated in the intake. Toyota ran both port and direct injection for these reasons.
EPA is rumored to possibly require a type of particulate filter for gasoline engines in the near future. The turbo could help fight soot emissions as well.
This will be interesting to see the development of a Turbo 3.5.

I would beleive the tundra will get a 3.5l turbo in the next gen. I would be surprised to see a turbo 3.5 in a Tacoma though.

0% chance for the Tacoma, easily could happen for Lexus but it would be an engine for their top F sport or the next supra. That's stupid power with the compression ratios, a lot more than the ecoboost would make. 10.0:1 vs 11.8:1

Doubtful the power plant would provide as much torque as the 2017 Ecoboost but I do see the engine providing more than enough power to really getting a Tacoma moving.:burnrubber:

Doubt the Tundra gets a new 3.5 turbo. The Tacoma is Toyota's pride joy.

Good God that would be nice to have. Might actually make this truck feel like it has more balls than my grandma's 1988 Dodge Dynasty:cheers:

I doubt we could see 350 hp or 45 lb.ft. of torque but I'm sure it will be up there. Keep an eye on Lexus to get an idea.

 they would need to improve the seat belts and install a full cage.

If someone can get me a transmission model number and type (example A340E 30-40LS) I may be able to find out max input torque. The A340E for example can take much more than my little 2.7 can put out. They were used in Supras that had autos and for a fact they can take more than 350 ft.lb. of torque without slippage.

Anyone want to give me a transmission model number?

I doubt it will ever happen but I could care less, my 3.5 does what I need it to do.
