U Joints replaced?

Quick question whats a good brand/website to buy U joints for a 2wd double cab 2006 toyota tacoma ? Any info will help. Local dealership is trying to charge me 798 to replace all ujoints.

 

I'd bet they are replacing the drive shaft, not just the u-joints.

Any local parts house should be able to fix you up with u-joints. Or Rock Auto online.

Factory would be best if not autozone and they give lifetime warranty. For that price you can just buy a cheap press and push them out and new one in. The tool you rent to pull them out sucks and Ive never had luck with them.

You know I should have remembered that since I greased them a week ago.

 

Now that I've found good Spicer numbers there is no way I'll go back to anything else!

 

pulling out ujoints is easy, just need a certain sixed socket, a hammer, and needle nose pliars. as far as a ujoint, moog is pretty good.

 

Then you gotta decide sealed or zerk fitted u-joints. I'm lazy about greasing them; so, I got sealed u-joints. I got

Moog Ujoints are terrible. Spicer maybe harder to find locally but they are the best.

I did research on this when i needed to do mine, Get the Spicer with Zerk fitting to keep it greased atleast every oil change or more and stay away from Moog.

 

If you have a six states in your area they sell spicer and usually install them for free if you buy there u-joints.

 

$800 for all of them at a dealer is probably a bargain. I was 1800 miles from home last week when one went bad. I had to drive 80 miles to the closest dealer and it cost me $280 to get 1 replaced. The joint alone was $80, the rest was labor. I didn't have many other options.

I never asked if there were going to replace the drive shift either. All they quoted me for was the ujoints. I'm going to have to call tomorrow to double check. If it was only for u joints I'll just take everyone advice and changed them myself this weekend

 

I am saying the drive shaft as that is what Many on here have said that the dealers are only replacing the drive shaft as a unit instead of just replacing the universal joints.

In my opinion 800 dollars is too much for universal joints. There are only three in the rear drive shaft. I would do it myself, just make sure to match mark everything so it goes back together the same as it came apart. I use a center punch to match mark as it will not rub off while handling.

 

So update... It turns out it was only the rear ujoint that was worn/cracked. I bought a replacement at oreilly's. I didn't have the proper tools so took it to a local tire shop they replaced it and only charged me 70 bucks. No more clunk noises thank goodness. Thank for everyone input.

 

Now make sure you keep them greased at every oil change.

Go and sin no more.

 

we have a local driveshaft shop that's been in business since the 70's.changed all 3 with spicer 530's and the carrier bearing I brought for 143.i hate u'joints.money well spent

 

does anybody know a good website to buy hub/wheel bearings?
