Truck just had 60K service..I did it. No prior indication anything is wrong with the brake system.

Today I launched my Skeeter at Callville Bay, Lake Mead. The ramp is funky cause of the low water. Never buried the tailpipe but it is pretty flat. Rear axle is submerged. Down the ramp and turn, engaged 4WD and backed down. Had to use reverse gear a couple times to get over the irregularities in the mobile blocks. Back up in first forward, disengage 4
WD and off the ramp to the parking. Parked the rig in first gear and engaged the parking brake lightly.
I fish pretty regularly. First time this has happened time for me

This evening the truck would not move. Passenger rear wheel is locked. Jacked up that side and got maybe an inch of play forwards and backwards. I'm thinking differential problem...but the drain plug was almost clean during the fluid change. Next step: recover the Skeeter... a good Samaritan helped. Then AAA call. Towed back to my place and the tow driver gets the Toyota to release by pumping the brake pedal hard a couple times; backs it off the tractor. I put it in my apartment parking lot.

How worried should I be? I'll pull the wheel and inspect the brake now.

My 07 had that problem in my case the drum brakes there is a bolt called the parking link that holds the two shoes together and it had become unseated/broken. I was able to use a 2x2 piece of wood inserted in the wheel and against the drum, and banging on it with a 5lb sledge to break the pads loose enough to drive, a trip to the mechanic is best for you.

As well as your brake problem , it is inadvisable to submerge your rear axle as it can draw water into the differential/ axle. You should change your diff oil, and then there is a mod which moves the diff breather higher up , search for differential breather mod, it only costs 20$ in parts.

I've done brake jobs before, Never on this Tacoma. Did my 1996 and 2004 Tacoma rear and front brakes.. Is this year more involved? Thanks for the heads up on Differential breather mod. I don't believe water came up over the top of the differential. About 1/3 or less of the tire is under water. Tonight , when we recovered after a super nice fishing day, water was up just over my ankles at the back of the truck. I should pull the drum, inspect the shoes and the parking brake adjuster...scour the drum inside, and wipe down with CRC brake cleaner or acetone, reassemble and test for parking brake adjustment. I have a brake bleeder tool. Did I miss anything before I get the red truck up on stands?

The water can come in thru the axle seals or the breather, if your axles were submerged, you may have introduced water...

Sounds like you are more knowledgeable than I when it comes to drum brakes, maybe a search on here, or a new thread asking about drum brake service is in order
