Been thinking about swapping out the factory radio with something that supports Carplay and make it a bit more functional than the Entune stuff...

Ideally I'd like to keep the Satellite radio, Bluetooth, usb connection/charge and steering wheel controls.

That said, I was looking at the pioneer stuff (AVIC-8200NEX) which looks like it would also require the Maestro RR to get all the steering wheel controls working like factory.

Anyone go down this road? Have any thoughts on this?
    Thank you

I have CarPlay in my new 2016 Golf R and I would take Entune! Having to cable my phone so it works also isn't my favorite thing either.

I'm eagerly awaiting getting rid of Entune. Haven't done it yet, waiting for someone else to go first. Get on it. Report back when finished.

Two days ago I swapped out Entune for a pioneer AVH-4200NEX that supports CarPlay. Bought everything from Crutchfield and I love it. Works so much better than Entune.

What all did you use other than the head unit. Did you get the Maestro unit? Did the factory mic for Bluetooth continue to work?

I got everything from Crutchfield that was needed for my truck. Metra 40-LX11 Antenna Adapter, iDatalink Maestro ADS-MRR Interface Module, and iDatalink HRN-RR-TO2 factory integration adapter. No you can't use the factory Bluetooth mic with this however I routed the new mic to the exact place where the factory mic is and it works great plus keeps that factory look. Just have to pull out the existing factory mic and put the new one in its place.

how long did it take you to install everything? Sound improved dramatically with the head unit swap?

I also got the dash kit as well which is needed TOYK974.

Took about an hour and a half to install. Yes I think the sound is much better and this unit definitely has a lot more power. I really like it.

Also I used my lightening cable/usb from the back of the unit and down through the led hole right above the QI pad. That's where I lay my phone anyway so that looks clean also.

Swapping the HU on stock speakers will sound night/day difference.

Just remember, they are still paper cone speakers....

At the end of the day, I will replace stock head unit, speakers, and a aftermarket 5 channel amp, and a sub.

I took the truck to a audio shop last week and they quoted me close to 4 grand for everything including install.... When i did my mustang in 2010 I did everything except a head unit since at the time they didnt sell the center stack since hvac and radio were integrated into the center stack... By the time 2 amps, and high end sub, and 4 speakers were installed out the door it cost 1800. A few years later i did the head unit, bough it for 800 with center stack adapter to move hvac and allow a double din head unit, installed for 100 dollars.

So a total over haul cost me roughly 2800 for everything.... No way im paying someone 4 grand for this....

My plan is to do the head unit with the same one the OP posted, as i dont need nav integrated, especially if it has car play/android auto. then the speakers, then a 5 channel amp and sub. Never having installed this stuff myself, is this something that someone with limited audio knowledge can achieve for cheaper than 4 grand?

I may also wait a year or two to see if toyota put carplay into the new models.

Did you lose any functionality with the center display between the gauges? I'm curious if you lose the radio info, nav directions, or anything else that the factory head unit pushes over to that display.

Yes nav directions no longer pop up there or incoming phone calls. You can still view the radio info that is playing.
