60k Scheduled Maintenance - what's in it?

Hello fellow Taco owners,
I am trying to understand what really needs to be done for a 60k maintenance 2012 V6 4x4. Several stealerships quote me different work from basic inspections to fuel system cleaning pricing from $600 to $860...really? They never seem to amaze how much of a rip-off dealerships are.

Anyways, any input you can provide would be helpful. Thanks!

 

Have you looked in the owner's manual?

 

I tried looking for it but nothing explicit. It just told me to contact a Toyota dealership. Maybe I am not looking at the right place

 

What might one expect that to cost?

Here's what I would do at 60k_

Replace Spark plugs* if not recently replaced
Change our front & rear differential fluids (Recommend AMSOIL

$30 75w-90 Synthetic Gear Lube - 1 Quart (Pack of 2)

75w-90 Severe Gear; I use it in my truck and its been great much smoother than the OEM stuff)
Inspect Transfer Case fluid(If it still looks golden/yellow/clear don't replace it; oddly the transfer case fluid tends to stay clean very well)
Replace Air filter; or clean it if re-usable
Replace Cabin Filter; or clean it if re-usable
Do a Drain & Fill on auto transmission fluid (Or complete flush if you like; if I flush it I would change fluid over to a different brand and not the cheap toyota stuff) If drain and refill just use the Toyota WS ATF Fluid about 3-4 quarts.
Grease up all the U-joins in the drive-shaft about 5 of them(Easy to do; Do not use any grease that contains Moly)
Check and retorque drive shaft bolts (I don't think its needed but worth checking it out)

Get wheel alignment rechecked and redone; if your noticing any irregular tire wear. Make sure to tell the technicians to torque the lower control arms down correct to 100lbs of torque(Sometimes they don't do it right and it can lead to all sorts of clunking noises)
Check tire pressure*

Check accessory belt if its worn or not; cracks ect. Replace if necessary.
Inspect PCV Valve; replace if you shake it and it doesn't rattle(Its such a cheap part you might as well replace it)

You can check your rubber CV boots for any tears; if not your good.

That's all I can think of on the top of my head and everything I listed here you can do in your driveway or garage; easily. There is plenty of guides and Youtube videos to show you how, you just have to get a little dirty but it'll save you a ton of money.

The fuel cleaner crap that toyota charges you for is the same thing you can do at home; just go fill up your gas tank and get a bottle of Gum-Out fuel injector cleaner; put that in your fuel tank and your good to go; I can't believe the cost they charge customers for; all they do is put a fuel cleaner in your fuel and make you pay $$$ for it.

 

Good list. I'd never let a dealer touch any of this work with their hourly rates. This is a few hundred bucks, a fun weekend in the drive way, and a 24pk depending on how fast you drink.

 

What the dealer quoted you is pretty much close to right on; but they won't do all the things I've listed to which I believe they should do; they will ideally just look at what the maintenance requirements are in the little book and go from there which is like no work at all but charge you an arm and leg.

My last dealership free maintenance was at 25k miles; I used a white out pen and marked the Diff drain and filler bolts with it to see if Toyota was really inspecting my diff fluids; turns out they didn't even bother to take the bolts off; all my markings were still lined up because no one touched it but they said they did inspect all my fluids; bunch of lies because if they did inspect it they would've found that I was short 1 quart of diff fluid in the rear from the factory. I made that discovery when I changed out my diff fluids; only 2 quarts drained out the rear.

Damn beat me to it! Here is the Maint. Schedule for 2015 4.0L page 45 for 60k

 

I appreciate all of this but will take it to the dealer - I used to take apart and reassemble 60s vws but this is way more than that for this 64 year old with no driveway - (they are going to rape me, aren't they? )

 

Ah; if only you were located in Alaska; I would help you out on the weekend for a case of beer and lunch haha.

If your going to the dealership; At least do not let them do the Fuel system cleaning; they charge a lot of money for that. All they do is put fuel injector/system cleaner in your fuel tank; I am being 100% honest here, my buddy works at my local Toyota Dealership. Buy a bottle of Gum-Out fuel system cleaner; fill up your tank and pour the bottle of fuel cleaner into your tank and your good to go. It'll save you some money there.

 

Not sure honestly this is my first Taco and I'm just shy of 17k miles still.

This is also a nice sticky for those experienced gear heads wanting to turn the wrenches themselves.

Maybe someone else can tell us how much out of pocket it will be?

Its getting to that point for me as well, the changing of stuff and checking of more stuff...
The taco is getting older and making different noises and I barely know how to change my oil.
I almost wanna go to the dealership but they probably wouldn't check everything like you guys said and still charge me an arm n a leg.

I have been wondering about the 3 part cleaning system that toyota sells. Supposedly they hook it up to a drip and run it through 3 different areas. Has anyone had this done? Is it anything special or just a money maker?

 

It cost me $585.00 Plus I have an extended service plan to 100K so it would be more. Find a good place and have them do it. Will be cheaper then the dealer
