Yeah, the early F-bodies are Camero's with different front and rear clips. In the 70's they started getting their own identity. My firebird started out as a Verdoro green exterior with the gold interior. Not the best color combo.

I was 8 when Smokey and the Bandit came out and I was hooked. Saw the Brewster Green T/A in the John Wayne movie McQ. It wasn't til years later I saw the Steve McQueen in Bullitt but by then I already knew that there were a lot of mustangs out there and not many Firebirds.

I appreciate all the work that goes into fixing these cars up an keeping them on the road. I think they need to be driven which is why mine will never be a trailer queen.

Glad to see some Firebird love in here! I love the look of the early 2nd gens. My personal favorite is the 71

Couldn't agree more! If I can't have a '73 this would be second choice.

Hope I don't sound too much like a noob for asking this but what are some of the differences between the 71 and 73? I know the 71 had some exclusive side vents but I don't know what else was different
Then you'll probably like this. This guy make great bud threads. Very close to a drug addiction to read his stuff

I'm by no means an expert but I think the body and interior differences are minor. The bigger differences are in the engine options. The '71 - '72 models had a 455 H.O. (High Output) option. In '73 they came out with the Super Duty (SD) 455 which was at the height of the oil embargo but still a potent motor.

The '60's RAM Air 400 motors are IMO some of the best Pontiac motors out there but many say "there's replacement for displacement" hence the 455.

So are the SD 455's better than the HO 455?

Those 455s killed more young men than the Viet Cong. Those cars are only good for going straight - corners were always the bane of their existence.

I think better is a relative term. I know that the '73 quadrant carb on those are highly sought after and demand a big price tag. IMO '74 was the demise of the Firebird/TA. Made a comeback in the late '70's then again in the early '00's. I saw a WS6 Bird on the road today. Not sure what year but to was in decent shape.

True, but so did the AMX Javelin, the 'Cuda's, Mach I's, and the Chargers of the world. Much like the Yamaha V-Max motorcycle.

The options of swapping in rack-&-piñon steering, aftermarket control arms, and independent rear suspensions bring these into the true "trans am" racing world.

I upgraded my '68 to polygraphite bushings & 1-1/8" sway bar and it has made a world of difference. I need similar body mounts and subframe connectors to help control the flex of the convertible body and I'll be ready for more HP.

Very true but part of the problem sometimes is the driver. Some just don't know how to corner fast. Take my budy and his 5.0 fox body for example. He tried to race me one time and kept losing control on the corners. The sad thing is I was going faster than he was on most of them too.
Hmm is the carb the only difference between the HO and the SD? Man I gotta do a bunch more Firebird research, just been busy learning and working on my 4runner

No, not just the carb but, most likely, the entire intake, heads, and exhaust. With the drop in octane the engineers had to figure out how to get HP without compression. The performance motors from the '60's were 10:1 CR. In the early '70's it was down to like 8:1. Not good for making power.
