    Ultra4 proves your point in wheelbase and height for crawling, but those rigs fly through the whoops too!

    Covered in stickers and chrome stick-ons for extra horse torques and foot powers. Icon sticker gets me tons of travel, dozens of milimeters.
    Then you get into shock valving and how that matters. Ever seen a truck with soft shocks hitting whoops? :rofl:

    Ah that makes much more sense. Yeah better to not risk it. Those Tundras are pretty capable once you figure out how to manage that torque:burnrubber:
    Oh yeah. If you know how to deal with it it's a great setup. Part of the reason IFS got such a bad rap is all the old wheelers that had used solid axles their whole lives had a hard time adjusting to IFS and would role because they would attempt the same lines. Now that most vehicles are IFS people are starting to figure out how to use them better
    I think you understood me man. Wasn't saying solid axles are worse than IFS. I was just saying IFS can do most if not everything a SAS rig can if you have the right person behind the wheel with the right setup. You can have a short wheel based IFS rig.

    That would be the bottomed out bounce?

    I know nothing of shock valving. Lots to learn as I figure out what I'm going to do with my truck.

    I need more time wheeling different terrains so I can figure out what I really want to do most.

    If I'm not mistaken (@digitaLbraVo correct me if I'm wrong since I'm pretty green when it comes to suspension) There's two different types of valving. One that soakes up the bumps and feels great at speeds but like you're riding a rock at slow speeds (progressive I think its called) and one that does the opposite, so feels good and cushy while slow and shitty when going fast

    Your questions are similar: essentially yes. One that moves well and one that stops excessive movement. You want flex and ease of motion to crawl. You need control at speed. Tighter/stiffer shocks absorb massive hits better and don't blow through the shock stroke. A stiffer shock won't necessarily compress as well for flexibility while crawling.

    @MADSTEEZE I'd say wheel what you have for now. Most guys aren't really into what it takes to build a solid "Baja Racer" but a strong mid travel can get you into what we do and more and be hucked. Any truck will break shit. You can ask any of the guys in the Long Travel bullshit thread: all you do is move your weakpoints until eventually the only thing left from Toyota is the engine and stickers on the doors.

    That's a great example of high rebound and no compression

    Valving can essentially control a shock to do all things well. Bypasses and coil overs have two different jobs. While a coil over spring can be tuned to take large impacts the internal shock controls the speed at which its absorbed. The bypass controls the speed at which the shock valving returns to its original state.

    I could be off but I sort of remember it being explained to me that way

    This would in turn mean you could have a high speed crawler (a-la- kOH rigs) but the size of the coil over and Bypasses gets mucho expsensivo

    @kyle11863 you have it backwards: progressive is like a King shock it gets harder as you press on it. Icon is the opposite: "digressive" they get softer as you push on it.

    I haven't gotten into the discussions about why one is better or not yet 'cause I don't really care to. The logic people use in their discussions rolls from "I have ___ one so it's best" but not with any actual application of physics.

    That's the type of valving though. You can also stiffen a progressive shock. There's a reason King are very popular in both Baja and climbing over boulders.

    I agree with Denny 100%. Stay how you are and figure out how you want to go. You will also get way better experienced by wheeling stock for awhile because its more challenging. Any idiot can do decent in a $50k truck, takes skills to do good in a stock one.

    The best @kyle11863 is the guys who drop $50k on a truck, have no idea what they're doing, then destroy a $50,000 truck. Suspension helps but it will not make the truck.

    Damn I had a feeling I had it wrong. I only heard those terms used once and that was months ago. Like I said I'm a suspension noob, just learning bits and pieces from the wiser people of TW

    I remember as : progressively harder. Digressively harder.

    Progression = increasing
    Digression = decreasing

    Honestly the Tacoma is a pretty gnarly vehicle with a good set of tires.

    Those are definitely the best, especially when they can't figure out what went wrong.

    Reminds me of the trip up here a few weeks ago. The only reason those kids were able to make it up 2N13D was because they attempted it in a Raptor. The ones that had the Jeep and the Ram never made it, and because of that thought I couldn't do it in the stock Tundra. Granted kids is probably not the best term since they looked older than me, but I use it because they were green as hell. The one with the Raptor would've ripped his bumper off if Jeremy and I hadn't yelled at him to stop a few times. There is no substitute for experience in my opinion
