Quick question about changing the rear diff oil

    I know it's a pretty straightforward process, but I was glancing over some DIY write-ups on the forums to avoid any surprises, and saw someone said to replace the crush washers on the filler and drain plugs.

    I'll be honest, had I gone at it myself without reading any DIYs, I'd have probably never considered that. May be a stupid question, but is it really necessary?

    ETA:

    Alright, I've got another question. What oil do you guys recommend I use in an '07 LSD rear diff?

    The book only says "SAE 90" for the above 0*F temp range, and to use hypoid gear oil with LSD modifiers.

    From what I'd been reading, it seemed
    $30 75W-90 Synthetic Gear Lube - 1 Quart (Pack of 2)
    75W-90 synthetic was the way to go. Now I'm reading people saying to not use synthetic in the Tacoma LSD.

    I have replaced the oil 2 times on the same washer, and on 2 different trucks. It wont hurt to replace it, as that is recomended, but if you dont, just make sure the surface of the gasket is clean, and be sure to keep an eeye on it for any leaks.

    I tried some different Synthetic LS oils in my diff, and it chattered pretty bad. I even tried different addatives, and amounts with no luck. I have found regular Hypoid gear oil works best, but some have said the Synthetic Royal Purple works good too. I havent tried the Royal Purple stuff.

    Nope. The non LS diffs need no addative.

    As long as its a Hypoid oil, its fine.

    IMO it would be a waste to go with a synthetic gear oil in a LSD rear. You're going to be changing your rear diff oil every 30k as it is, so why bother with a synthetic oil. Dino oil has plenty of life left of it after 30k in the diffs.

    I went round and round with this, a lot of different stories out there for what worked and what didn't. I was going to go with 80w-90 Dino and add 4oz of friction modifiers, but couldn't find any the day I was going to do it.

    I ended up with Valvoline 80w-90 SynBlend that was for LS or conventional differentials with no additional modifiers and have not had any problems the last 2,000 miles in 20-40degree weather, FWIW.

    Edit: 2008 Sport, with Mechanical LSD.

    I'm starting to think of all the common topics, what oil to use in the mechanical LSD seems to have the least consensus.

    You said you used

    75w-90 (synthetic?) without the LSD additives. What about synthetic gear oils with the LSD additives? I mean with the additives already mixed in? Or would I have to add more separately anyway?

    I have a 05 with no lsd I put royal purple 75-90 with no issues it says ok with a lsd but for the price it better be. I figured I cant go wrong with some of the best fluids available. fyi I use RP in both diffs, trans. case, and motor oil. my mechanic says in his opinion that is perfectly fine but he only uses oem fluids in any transmission he services so that is toyota atf.

    If you have limited slip differential you will need to add an additional small tube of LSD additive. Can find at Autozone etc.

    Not necessarily. I have a mechanical LSD, and I don't have a TRD package, just SR5. Check the back of your rear diff. If it's an LSD, it should have a sticker on there saying something like "LSD oil only".
