front brakes on 2wd 2.4l

    They started squealing about 500 miles ago. Previous owner had a dealer do them at 90k ($620 parts + labor)or 25k ago. The dealer turned down the rotors so I couldn't reuse them this time.

    The new pads have 12 mm of material and mine were down to 4 mm. Toyota says the minimum is 1mm so it seems like the wear indicator started squealing way too soon.

    I don't drive it that hard and I don't believe the previous owner did either.

    Does 25k on a set of pads sound good?

    I bought the parts from Toyota:
    Front pads 04465-04040 $77
    Anti-squeal shim kit 04945-35031 $31
    Fitting kit 04947-35020 $27
    Front rotors 43512-35290 $125
    Total parts $250

    It is bad that Toyota makes you buy all the shims and fitting you need to do the job correctly instead of including them with the pads. Maybe I should go with Autozone next time.



    The brake fluid was last changed about 3.5 years ago and what came out was quite green.

    The front wheel bearings are in fine shape though and just needed repacking. I reused the rear seals.

    Test drive was fine.

    I'm sore now.

    They made it easy to understand all of the procedures. They did not however use a torque wrench on any of the bolts. And used a channel-lock pliers on the axle nut (ACK!!). From the service manual (ft-lbs):
    Wheel nuts 83
    Support bracket 80
    Slider pins 65
    hub bolts 47
    brake line bolt 22
    bleed fitting 8

    To re-assemble the wheel bearings and hub, torque the 30 mm axle nut to 26 ft-lbs then spin the hub in the forward direction several times to seat the bearings. Completely loosen the axle nut then hand tighten it and spin the hub some more. I didn't measure the preload but did note that the wheel hub spun just as freely as it did before I worked on it. The cotter pin also installed with the original orientation.


    As far as bleeding the brakes goes, the service manual does not say you have to do anything special because of the ABS system. I just did a traditional brake bleed (including the load proportioning valve). I always put a 2x4 under the pedal so that my helper cannot press the pedal all the way to the floor. If I don't do that, I usually have to replace the master cylinder because the additional pedal travel damages the master cylinder seals.
