Painted my fenders this weekend. Started Friday around 10am and just finished them now. All rattle cans but I must say they turned out excellent.

i know exactly what you mean lol i was a bit worried after i sprayed the clear. there were some pretty bad runs cuz my hands were dead from spraying at that point lol. but luckily i was able to knock em down with 1k. probably a bit too rough but it worked out at the end of the day lol

    Hey Guys
I'm planning a trip for next month. I'll be driving the first 280 miles of the Utah Backcountry Discovery Route, ending in Moab. The crux of the route, just south of Moab, is a steep, tippy decent with sketchy stair steps and plenty of shit to inflict body damage if I fuck it up. I figured some training was in order, so I called Jimbow @NotRed, AKA Macgyver, and asked if he'd like to run a trail called Burns Canyon off of 138 near Big Bear. He was game, and met me at my place on the appointed day. We got comms and our route squared away and then headed up to the breakfast place we all went to last year. The weather was perfect.
    IMG_2060.jpg
    P1000141.jpg
After breakfast we headed further up 138 to FR 2N01 near mile marker 41 and aired down. The trail is easy for the first 5.8 miles, and passes through a beautiful mixed forest of pine and Joshua trees:
    P1000143.jpg
Here the trail started to get a little more interesting. At about the 7 mile mark we faced a steep ascent through a rock garden. This required careful line choice, but we spotted each other through with no drama. The hill ended at a saddle where we took a break before beginning the steep and difficult descent:

No worries for MacGyver with his BAMF .25 IFS skid:
    IMG_1130.jpg

I put my skids to good use over this unavoidable boulder:
    P1000146.jpg

Here MacGyver had to cut it close to the driver's side boulder in order to avoid a tippy situation if one is too far right:
    IMG_1131.jpg

I put my slider into it at the same spot:
    IMG_2064.jpg
After we made it through these principle difficulties we found ourselves having to make a decision. We could bear left at 2N02 and head back towards Big Bear, or go right and drop down into Pioneer Town and head home via Morongo Valley on Hwy 62. We went right.

I don't think it would have been smart to do this trail solo, although in retrospect no single obstacle was really that hard. 4WD is required on the steep ascent, and low-range is very helpful on the bouldery downhill sections, so I would say it is not 2WD friendly, although I'm guessing Ron might just head up there and prove me wrong. Our trucks performed beautifully, and being in communication via ham radio was very helpful. Best of all, I feel like the UTBDR will be doable without undue drama. Many thanks to Jimbow, who is about as stand-up a guy as I have ever known.

Great write up and pics Bruce, and thanks for the kind words. Can't believe I didn't scrape up my sliders on that rock! Happy trails on your trip and look forward to seeing some shots from that!
