One of my previous black labs that I had to put down a couple years ago was my Cooper, aka coop, aka coop-a-loop.......he was very near and dear to my heart, I miss him everyday......my vote is Cooper.

Yeah, it's funny because they know their name and also respond to thier nicknames. Another black lab I rescued after Coop is this guy JIMBO. He is Cooper reincarnated lol. Looks identical, same habits and quirks....scary. Sometimes I'll call him mini coop. Cooper was a 90lb guy, JIMBO is a 60pounder.

My dog is named Lucy but answers to bear, bear dog, chow chow, and goosey which is funny. I like how they answer to their nicknames.

I also have a Lucy. Sweet dog to us, a freaking bloody killer to anyone not us. Once she trusts you she won't leave you alone, but if she doesn't trust you...chomp! She's inherited the nickname Lucy-fer. That's her on the right. She bites out of fear, but her "little sister" is actually helping to change that behavior.

    image.jpg

Kiki, or "Kiki-monster," is 8 pounds of terror. She's actually a sweetheart who will show her belly for anyone...unless they are a plush dog toy (the furrier the better). At that point, she switches into beast mode and gets all giddy (she actually squeaks in joy) when she gets the stuffing out.

Both are rescues, and both spent time feral. We think Lucy spent a lot more time feral than Kiki because she still distrusts strangers and knows that katydids are "good eating." Thanks to Kiki, Lucy is learning to relax; thanks to Lucy, Kiki is learning how to dog.

I miss the redbone hound I had growing up and the Akita I got next, but there is a benefit to having dogs that don't weigh (and eat) as much as I do.

It's awesome that so many choose to go the rescue route. The reward is a two way street. Here's 3 of mine enjoying life at camp. image.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpg

Mine was also a rescue. I took my chow right out the asshole's backyard. He was using her as a rape dog to make pit-chow fighting dogs. She's off leash trained and great around babies and other dogs for the most part. For being a rescue I couldn't ask for a better dog.

    OMG, that's horrible!!

Has it affected her behavior around other dogs?

Glad she's so good with you and the fam.

That brings back memories of my pup when we first got him. We kept him in the kitchen in case of any accidents since he was only 10wks old. Most of the time we were in playing with him, but when we would leave him by himself for more than 10 minutes (eating dinner etc) he started getting separation anxiety. He started putting his front paws on the top of the gate, then slowly learned how to climb it lol. Mind you he's a little smaller than a border collie so he has to stand pretty upright to be able to get his paws on top. We got a second one and stacked them but once he was completely on the 2nd gate it would fall under his weight and he'd get free lol

    Should have named him Houndini.

Lol. My gate is pretty thrashed. Still works but barely.......thanks to Jackson (the one on the right in the pic above) He so dam mischievous it kills me.....he like a little kid. Always into something, breaking something, eating something. He can scale my 6ft privacy fence....to play with his dog buddy next door (Oden). I've trained that out of him although he needs some remedial training every so often. A page back or so I mentioned that I rescued him 1 day before the shelter was going to put him down. Even with all the headaches he gives me I know I did I a good thing. When my fiancé gets mad at him I always tell her.....these are the things you'll think about when he's gone....and you'll miss it. Ah Jackypoo. I'm glad I'm giving him a good home. Here he is chillin on the couch thinking he's big shit!!

Nope she's a good girl going 13. You would never no she was a rescue. She's not scared of anything or anyone and goes up to everyone she's so friendly. In fact when I am surfing I will come out the water with her just sitting next to a family she adopted lol.

Riley didn't become Riley for a week or so. I had visions of various names but I couldn't pick so I let him pick for me :D He got his name because he literally lives the life of Riley. He answers to Mr. Handsome, Poopers, poo-poo head, and of course, Riley. The poop nicknames come from his early days before I chose his name.

My Lucy got her name because when I brought her home she was sniffing around hit the stereo on button and Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds was playing. I figured it was a sign. They guy I took her from said she didn't have a name. I got her when she was 3 so for 3 years the poor girl didn't have a name.
